Description
The beer of Val Dieu is synonymous of quality and authenticity. It is the only Belgian abbey beer to be 100% brewed in a living abbey such as the famous Belgian Trappist beers. The monks of the Abbey of Val Dieu are the ones who are at the origin of the beers which are brewed today on the site. Historically, the Cistercian monks were famous for their qualities as brewers. The monks of Val Dieu are in line with this reputation.

750 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 10.5%. Dark brown colour, huge beige head. Aroma of Belgian ale yeast, mild spices, Christmas cookies and caramel. Lovely flavour with the same elements, some sweetness but not too much, also notes of dark dried fruits, pepper and fairly distinct bittering hops.

Bottle at home watching a garbage film. Flattish orange colored pour and frothy big head. Nose is candied fruits and some herbs. Tatses of faint herbs and spices, subdued for a winter ale, some lemon, and white grape, touch woody, and bread crust. Medium bodied.

I think this is being brewed for the Spanish market, don't ask me why. At just 4,3% ABV, it's surprisingly structured and balanced.

A hazy golden pour below a stable, thick, long-lasting, off-white head. Aroma is porridge, mint, lemon, white chocolate, earth.

Dry onset. Crisp, full-bodied, well-rounded. Long-lasting finish with a touch of bitterness and renewed citrus and mint tinges.

Solid Belgian strong. Florals and some coriander. Light lemon balm. Dried, candied lemon. Pour hazy yellow with good initial head. Soft floral finish. Bottle.
