Description
Great Beer Above All Else

Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.

Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

Can (courtesy of skyview). Toffee malt and lemon peel/pine hops aroma. Hazy amber color with moderate head. Lightly sweet toffee malt and moderately bitter grapefruit peel hops flavor. Different than the average Festbier to say the least.

From notes. Wonderful aroma of pine, tropical fruit, tangerines and grapefruit hoppiness on a background of caramel malt. Pours a coppery color with a good off white head. Taste is nice and bitter but still quite drinkable. Very resinous flavor. Too dry to be called a hop syrup but it’s a hop party. Mouthfeel is round without getting cloying. Hop oiliness abounds. Great beer.

2010 bottle shared at a tasting. Opaque black with a nice rusty beige head. Interesting, unique bitter cocoa hop aroma. Creamy, thick chocolate body that remains quite drinkable. Underlying soapy bitterness. Really quite mild and drinkable for an Imperial Stout. Some chocolate syrup in the finish. Cocoa richness. World Class, though I remember the 09 being hoppier.

Can thanks to secret santa. Nearly brilliant golden to light amber pour with a large, fluffy, slightly off-white head. Toasty and bready malt aroma, lots of fruity esters, berries, currants, tea and marmalade. Citrusy, light husky, stone fruit and candied orange peel (hop) aromas. Light peanutshell huskiness. Flavors are malt forward, toasty, grainy, bready, just slightly husky. Tea and marmalade. A hint of citrus, light tropical fruits from both hops and esters. Medium bitterness, but just enough to balance. A solid mineral character. Medium carbonation, fuller body for such a light beer. No alcohol, very easy. Doesn’t feel very authentic, but it is very sessionable and tasty!

Can from a generous trader. Pours dark brown, almost black. Tan head. Nose of smoked malt, freshly brewed coffee and roasted barley. Taste is the same. Lots of freshly brewed coffee. Creamy mouth feel. The closest beer to drinking an ice coffee that I’ve had. Full to medium body.
