Great Beer Above All Else
Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.
Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

Re-rate 9/13: Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks kerenmk. Dark brown with amber hues and a nice beige head. Great aroma full of coffee beans, dark chocolate and nuts. Bittersweet flavor with some roastiness, lots of coffee beans, some nuttiness and a bit of dark chocolate. Finishes with a bit of hoppy bitterness. Medium-bodied. Very good stuff. 8/4/7/3/15=3.7
Bottle sample at a tasting. Thanks David C. Dark clear brown with a beige head. Big pleasant coffee aroma. Sweet flavor with roasted coffee beans, some oatmeal, malt and some piney hoppy bitterness in the finish. Medium-bodied. 8/4/7/3/15=3.7

Draft at Darkness Day: Pours a true copper color with a finger of creamy sand colored head. Sticky lacing. Aroma is thick with citrus and florals. Rich and sweet. Flavor is grapefruit, citrus, resin, and light florals. Just full of hop melodies, but the citrus and tropical fruitiness really stands out. Delicious.

Cask at Darkness Day: Lightly orange-amber pour with a large, creamy beige head. Massively thick sheets of lacing. Nose is rather sweet and fruity, mostly citrus. A bit of the tea is present, but comes through much more in the taste. Nicely rounded citrus and malty notes compliment the tea and oak notes. Nice.

Cask @ Darkness Day: Dark brown pour with a finger of creamy tan head. Great lacing. Nose is heavily sweet and bourbon filled. Flavor is subdued, some sweetness from the bourbon, light oaky notes, roast, and nutty. Comes accross a little weak in the end and finished really soft... just ok.

Tap @ Darkness day. Nice thick orange color, cannot see through it. Has a strong head on top. As advertised, it is a hop forward brew but not the way I like my hops. The bitterness is strong throughout and the hops are a mix of green vines, some sweet hops, and some light citrus. Its not as dry and attenuated as I like my hoppy beers and the hops are not centered on a particular area for my tastes.

can, pours dark brown with a tall frothy tan head. Aroma is very roasty, slightly nutty. Dark malt, coffee, almonds. Smells just like some of the great dark lagers of Prague. Wow, very rich beer. Tons of coffee flavors and a nice dark malt base but the coffee really shines. It lingers in a bitter coffee grounds finish. Nice smooth mouthfeel

Can from allendodd. Purveyor of Surly to the needy masses. Thanks! Pours a slightly hazy amber with a frothy off-white head. Very floral aroma above some sweet lightly roasted caramel. Less than medium body. Sharpish carbonation. It’s so floral it’s perfumey. Very strong light stone fruit notes. Finishes with a rather citric bitter. Other than the body, I think it fits the style. Like it a lot.

Can from allendodd. Thanks loads! Pours a very dark brown with a foamy tan head. Aromas of chocolate and treacle. Medium body with frothy carbonation. Flavors of citrus/resin over nicely roasted malt. Treacle too. Very smooth brown ale. But with lots of flavor. Finishes with a nice level of bitter on the rear tongue edges. Good beer.

Can thanks to daknole. Pours with a decently large, foamy white head over a clear yellow body. Aroma is sweet and bready with a bit of fruit and light citrus. Quite crisp smelling. Taste is sweet, a touch bitter with some bread and caramel notes. Very clean, and super easy to drink. Sparkling carbonation, light bodied. Very nice. 3.5
