Great Beer Above All Else
Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.
Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

AKA - Black Braggot. Draft at ACBF09 in Boston. I think I spent a good 10 minutes off the floor contemplating my love/hate for this. I think the holes I burned through my insoles that day had more to do with it though. Poured out a black & tan color, a bit greasy, with some cola-ish head. Smell was interesting enough, with mainly prunes, brown sugar, cola, & charred wheat. Taste just overwhelmed me with ugly. A black wheat feel with tons of table sugar. Some hope with pitty fruit, though it follows with bitter nutmeg(that I got no aroma out of), a nasty licorice residual, & just way too much sticky honey. Carbonation was harsh, dragging citric acid & grainy malt in its wake. I’m a fan of braggots, but this was just a mess.

Tap. Poured dark brown with a dark creamy head. Aroma consisted of mainly dark hops, hints of coffee, caramel and a sweet cream smell. The flavor began surprisingly bitter, though by no means aggressive. The beer then transitions into a pleasant malty flavor, almost chocolate like.

Tap. Poured light cloudy brown with an off-white head. Aroma was bitter with some grainy notes, perhaps oats and just a bit of sweet citrus. Flavor was a very nice balance of malts and hops as the flavor began malty but hops kicked in throughout. A nice beer.
