Description
Great Beer Above All Else

Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.

Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

Can Pours a deep redish amber with a light tan head. Big woody bitter aroma. Flavor was very bitter and a bit of sour fruit at the end. Big long late IBU bite.

Hazy copper pour with small off-white head. Aroma leans toward the malts — toasted grain, — but is also moderately hoppy with notes of flowers, resin and grapefruit. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter and slightly acidic. The hops are more dominant in the flavor, presenting bitterness and flowers on top of the malt sweetness. Medium body and slightly sticky texture. Fairly good balance between malts and hops.

Above average brown ale mainly because it presents more body and more flavors than most brown ales. The body is a dark brown underneath a small, but fizzy brown head. The aroma is slight, but what is there is malty with roasted grain and a bit of chocolate and very lightly hoppy. The flavor, though, is moderately sweet and lightly bitter and full of malt character raising tastes of caramel, nuts, toast. The finish is citrus hops. Medium body. Lively carbonation.

FoBAB 2007, Chicago. IPA foam makes up half the glass, and that foam itself is really hoppy. Large pine and pineapple smell, taste adds the big punch grapefruit and cat. Strong malts over as milder oak note. A whole lotta beer in an eensy-weensy glass.

FoBAB 2007, Chicago. yeaaaahhhh! Smell of plum and cherry and currant. Black, soulless body under a rocky head that leaves chunks of itself behind on the sides. strong, but very smooth. Some stout bitterness left in my mouth, but so much warm bourbon texture that it’s impossible to mind that fact that it’s searching for a good vein.

FoBAB 2007, Chicago. Big black body and eggshell head. Big hit of smoke in this one. Whole thing just knocks me over. In fact, this is about all I had written down about this. Just these few sentences and the numbers above.

A very good beer, but not as incredible as standard Darkness. But fortunately, the bourbon hasn’t ruined the beer. It compliments, rather than overwhelms the flavors. As a beer that relies heavily on hops for its flavor, this might be a bit past its prime and has come to taste differently than probably intended. Bourbon in the aroma along with roasted malt and red wine. Flavor has slightly more bourbon that compliments the sweet malt and hops. Thick and heavy palate.

Thanks to beerlando for this - a saison in a can...nice! - slightly hazy golden pour, with a light copper tint - frothy, lasting head - aroma of bitter orange peel and peaches, along with some soft honey and lavender notes, light herbs - fairly assertive hops up front, that couple with some apricot and orange pulp - a moderate malt profile rises up from underneath that, and the oats actually become pretty apparent, which is odd, but it works - yeasty flavors, light white pepper spice, some coriander, and light belgian fruitiness linger in the finish, which is long and dry - this is a well-made saison.
