Great Beer Above All Else
Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.
Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

A hazy dark copper orange ale with a thick frothy creamy light moka head. A wonderful hops aroma, resinous, with citrus and marmelade notes, some caramel. Wow! In mouth, a light malt with good citrusy c-hops, a bit lighter than expected from aroma. An excellent IPA. Gift from Piscator. Tasted with Probstk, May 26 2007.

Courtesy of markwise. Pours clear amber with tan head. Not much to be said about the aroma except it is full on coffee grounds and little else. The taste is similar with loads of coffee mixing with mild notes of maltiness in the background. Solid coffee brew but I think CCB’s coffee stout has ruined me on all others at this point.

Bottle Pours out a ink black topped with a brown head. Aroma of milk chocolate sweetness along with a nice rich roast malt. Tast was of more sweet chocolate and a nice blend of coffee. A nice little bitter hop on the end. This brew almost lived up to the hipe. Very tasty.

copurtesy of markwise. Pours black with beige head. Aroma of roasted malts and coffee. Taste is easy to drink, light and plenty of nice coffee as well as caramel. Overall palate is thin. Goes down easy.

Muddy dark brown. Lightly smokey nose with some chocolatey/fudgey overtones. Soft body. Fudgey on the palate, with a slight smoke finish.

Can courtesy mgumby. Ruby-garnet color. Very nice coffee flavor, with a tight central american bean tone. Nice iced coffee flavor, too, with touches of cream. Dry palate. I really like the coffee elements but on the whole it lacks depth and oomph.

Pint can my Dad brought down to me from Minneapolis. Pour is mostly clear mahogany dark brown with pretty settling that builds up a thick and lasting 3 inch light tan head. Aroma of somewhat stale coffee, pine hoppiness and roasted malt. Nice enough, though this was a pretty blah coffee nose. Taste is very much the coffee aromatics and taste at the beginning, middle is the brown ale of Bender with a pine hop bitterness to the finish. The hops are pretty understated, and the coffee dominates throughout. I didn’t mind the concept of this beer, but it really suffered from a flat, dull coffee profile. Not sure what technique they used to extract the coffee, but it ended up tasting almost like instant coffee. Palate is creamy medium, coats the mouth nicely. The finish is quite long, and features even more of the coffee. Having said all of this, it is still a clean beer that is easy to sip, just a little dull.

I didn’t care for One that much, and usually I don’t like bourbon in my beer, but Bourbon One is a great success. Sweet and thick, and very low carbonation. Lots of sweet malt, some fruit. No perceivable hops, but there is a significant amount of bourbon, and it tastes and smells great. One of the highlights of Winterfest 2009.

Winterfest 2009. Well carbonated, even for a bracket. Some honey aroma. Clearly recognizable as not a pure mead. I don’t get the bourbon, but I do get some white wine. Medium palate.

Pretty close to black. Aroma of milk chocolate, light hazelnut and really smooth espresso (think Epic pulled from a Synesso). Sweet, sugary with a rich Turkish coffee accent. The body is heavy but silky. Nice brew.
