Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.
Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

(Can 47,5 cl) Courtesy of Skyview. Slightly hazy, amber golden with a creamy, off-white head. Very fresh and piney aroma. Medium body with light caramel accents and otherwise completely dominated by the very dry, piney aroma hoppiness. Distinctly bitter finish. Excellent, but in style very far from an Oktoberfest! If this was served in the beer halls of Munich, the poor local beerdrinkers would never what hit them... 110108

47.5 cL can. Pours hazy orange with a diminished white head. Aroma is slight spiced, solid floral hoppy aroma. Flavour is medium sweet and solid fruity towards fresh fruity hoppy. Ends very fresh fruity. Nice ipa by all means, but this ha very little to do with a classic Octoberfestbier.

Entered to celebrate my 9700th rating with the curently 4th highest rated beer on Ratebeer. Drunk at GABF 2007. A black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet and very roasted, combined with notes of chocolate and coffee. The flavor is sweet with notes of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt, as well as a light note of alcohol. The flavor is very balanced. Nice one.

Can shared by artusory. Slightly hazy straw body, thin off-white head. Bready nose, earthy and chalky, with light floral spice. Potent, punchy spice body, floral, with fennel and bitter notes, potpourri, and light bready malt. No soft, sweet, flabby malt heaviness here. Robust, aggressive, and spartan.

Surly could have done a lot more with this. The smoke is very light, but it is there in the aroma and flavor. The flavor is also lightly sweet with a touch of fruit, but this is quite dry for a Baltic porter. I would like it to be a little sweeter. As it is, it seems to fit the Scotch ale style well with the dry malt flavors, some earth, and lack of hops. Smooth palate, very easy to drink.

A good beer, not the ABR highlight I was hoping for. This is one of the most lightly hopped beers Surly has brewed, and is more traditional than some of their products in a style that doesn’t rely on massive hops for flavor or aroma. But it is still more heavily hopped than any other Baltic porter I have tasted. The aroma does have roasted malt and just a touch of soy sauce. A thick, black beer with some carbonation. Flavor is medium sweet malt, some roasted character, and a hint of red wine. Unusual finish for the style and the hops do show themselves much more at the end.

Awesome beer from a can! And hoppy? Man. At 6.2% its an IPA, but the hop rate here is all DIPA levels. Big huge piney resiny hop aromas, followed by monstrous resiny hop flavors. Hugely bitter finish. Huge, just huge. There’s a brown sugared toast for the malt, which is heavy enough but is clearly taking a back seat. Lightly hazed dark reddish copper, big beige head, thick and protein rich, with moderate lacing.

Can from Tytoanderso - Thanks! Pours a dark amber colow with a medium, creamy beige head. Thick lacing. Nose is intense with citrus, pine, and caramel. Flavor is full of hops, citrus and piney. The maltiness is subtle, this is lives up to the hop loaded hype. I really enjoyed this brew!

Can from Tytoanderso - Thanks! Pours a mildly hazy orange with a smaller beige head. Aroma of fruits, mainly citrus, and hints of maltiness, Flavor is fruity and crisp, citrus, apple, apricot blend before the hops meet in the tail. Interesting take on the style.
