750 ml. 2008 vintage. Shared with SpudClampDawg and Pete. Inviting deep brown to black body below a dark brown head that slowly diminishes. Aroma is sweet with notes of chocolate, molasses, roasted grain. Just a hint of resin. The flavor is heavily sweet and lightly bitter. The finish is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter with some light acidity. Full body with a creamy, milkshake like, texture. Lively carbonation. Lacks complexity. The sweetness overwhelms everything else to the point of becoming cloying erasing any chance of depth or complexity. Overall, a bit of a mess. Very disappointing.

On tap. Poured a dark amber with a light brown head. Aroma is very hoppy, dominated by a piney aroma from the hops. Lots of hops, I detected a underlying fruity flavor.

Can from MGM Liquors in Woodbury, MN at the 8th Richmond Gathering on 06/06/2009. Dark brown body with ruby highlights and a medium creamy off-white head. Sweet nutty and caramel aroma with a bit of floral hops. Sweet nutty flavor, some toastiness with a bit of dry caramel and some floral hops. Medium light body with moderate carbonation.

Draft at Bavarian Lodge. My 1,300th American beer rating! Spicy dry hops over a sea of lightly kilned malts. Clean beer color. Thick, warming malt, with a European peppery hop load. Would probably rate much higher if we weren’t in the middle of some of Bavarian Lodge’s fantastic tap beers.

Can with thanks to Dakzale. Pours the color of darkly stained cherry wood with a cola like head of a finger and aromas of earth and nuts. Flavor is very similar and very good. It is very nutty with a little bit of a woody edge to it. Mouthfeel is OK, but I think I would like it to be a bit thicker. As is, I would definitely take more of this, though.

50cl can. Thanks to Bu11zye. Pours cloudy orange/amber with a creamy white head. Nose is malts, caramel, citrus and pine. Medium bodied. Smooth. Very well balanced. Was surprised how malty sweet this was. Good!

can at Fort Wayne tasting - Pours hazy orange with a lingering off-white head. The aroma is mostly citrus hops. Flavor is big citrus hops with some mild malt backing. It’s medium bodied and of course finishes with long lasting hops bitterness. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but given the rating I thought I’d enjoy it more.

can at Ft Wayne tasting - Pours hazy orange-gold with a lingering white head. The aroma is mainly of citrus hops. Tastes moderately hoppy with citrus notes. There’s also an odd earthy character that I didn’t appreciate. It’s on the watery side and doesn’t have enough malt character. I love bitter beers, but this brew doesn’t do it for me. It’s uneven and lacking. If this can was typical, then I don’t get the high ratings for it.

2009 Can - Thanks skinnyguy! - Pours a pure brown with a smaller beige head. Aroma is sweet, nutty, and coffee filled. The taste is much more coffee oriented than anything else. It’s got a coffee and cream type of thing with some cocoa, nuts, and roastiness. I guess the iced coffee cited in the description is pretty accurate... A fun brew.

Thanks to sliffy for sharing a bottle. The beer is a deep brown color with a medium thin beige head that dissipates steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Roasted coffee and milk chocolate aroma with a hint of malt. Medium body with flavors of coffee, dark chocolate and malt. Touches of hops at times too. The finish is mildly bitter with a lingering coffee aftertaste. Enjoyable all around.
