Description
Great Beer Above All Else

Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.

Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

Rating #200. 16 oz. can. Pour is deep copper. Taste and aroma are big hops. If this was a blind taste, would have guessed OR or WA brew. Nice balance throughout, and a very clean, dry finish. Overall a great beer.

Initially huge cream-yellow head, dwindling rapidly even when fed by well-carbonated, darker red-brown beer. Beautiful grapey hops nose, truly superbly aromatic, if a tad unidimensional. Exotic fruit as lychee, dry green sultana’s, and caramelised puff pastry. Dry, wry taste totally dominated by hopoils and α-acids. Hopdryness is such that a dry-out effect is realised on the lingual lowerfront. There’s some caramel malts underneath, but not enough. First of a sip seems well-bodied, but the finish is even thin in texture. Too bad about the unidimensionality. The nose is superb in its promise, the finish is very... American.

Very good, very fine, nitro-like creamy, dark cream-coloured head, slightly irregular over very dark brown beer with some faint red-brown highlights. Dry hoppy nose, bit of coffee, creamcake hinting at underlying sweetness. Whiffs of liquorice and caramel aroma’s. Again a combination of dry hops, coffee, oatmeal (indeed) and the typical burnt-sourish flavours of stout. Two things surprise me: the effortless going-over from on stage in the taste to the next: very good balance, as well as the accuracy of the commercial description on the can (not the above). Retronasal a lot of caramel. Velvety, creamy MF and full body. Nice oatmeal stout. Thanks, Dave.

Starts with a thin off-white head. Musky hop aroma. The flavor was all bitterness with the malts failing to appear for any support. Lack of depth and finish. Shag must have gotten the good part of the can?!?!

Clear brown with no head. Roast malt aroma with some caramel. Sweet flavored. Simple easy drinker, but not very complex.

ABR 2006. Surly beers can be hard to classify, and "brown ale" hardly does this beer justice so if someone has a better classification, like American pale ale, please submit the correction. The bourbon aroma is on the light side and not overpowering like some bourbon beers. The aroma gets stronger as it warms, however. Lots of bourbon in the flavor and the intense hops of the standard Bender have mellowed.

Perhaps the best coffee aroma I have ever experienced in a beer. Lots of coffe in the flavor, and medium-bitter chocolate as well. Not as heavilly hopped as the standard Bender, but an outstanding coffee beer.

II believe that merging Teabag Bender and standard Bender was an error as the beers have very different flavors, but apparently the admins don’t believe me. I rating below is for teabag bender for anyone lucky enough to find it. Spicy tea aroma, and spicy green tea flavor. It leaves a green tea flavor on the palate, and it is not as nearly as heavily hopped as the standard bender. Some lemongrass. The tea comes through quite well overall. Another successul beer from Surly. The palate however, it very light.

Maybe the best brown ale ever, even though it doesn’t fit into any style very well. The aroma is mosty hops and light malt, but this is fairly light. Flavor is coffee, medium sweet malt, and hops. With the dark color it is like an oatmeal stout generously hopped. As it warms the flavor changes and strange yeasty, but not bad flavors come out. An unusual creation and quite good.

One of the highlights of the Autumn Beer Revew, 2006. A black beer, as imperial stouts tend to be. Aroma has hops and roasted malt. Some soy sauce and more hops in the flavor. Very thick and heavy. This is a well hopped beer, but there is more to it than an intense hop character. Well done.

TennisJoel and I were out for some tennis and beer tonight, and the last stop is Pigfoot’s place, the Blue Nile. Al always has some good things on tap. Little did these two conservatives know that tonight was some sort of party for a Democrat Congressional candidate. I was afraid the television camera would find me there. Anyway. This is a good beer but the least impressive I have tasted form Surly, and I only say that because they have set a high bar for themselves. This beer has a powerful hop aroma, rather than the light Octobery aroma I expect from a marzen. The beer is red, and has a large, lacing white head that does last a long time. Flavor is almost all hops, with very light malt, the opposite of what I expect from an Octoberfest. I like Surly and have yet to have a bad beer from them. But this beer is predictable however, and it is time for these guys to branch out into something that does not leave a hop burn. Good work, but go for more guys.
