Suntory Barleywine 2018 9% A crystal clear orange gold in color with a soapy off-white head of foam. Right off the bat it doesn’t look to style as pretty much every barleywine I’ve ever had was darker. The aroma is grainy garbage with ripe bananas over it. The taste is not so terrible, bready banana and caramel and while it will never be great I think some age would make it ok. It isn’t as boozy as I expected. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Wanted to try this for a while - and now got this from my most usual supermarket, didn't expect that. Pours clear golden, some foam on top. Nose is malty, but also doesn't have any extra character besides some sweetness. Rather dull strong lager (or happoshu) aroma. Taste is somewhat stronger, malty and a bit of caramel even, some light bitterness, resembling barleywine if I really focus. Finish is shortish, light bitterness and something herbal in the finish. Drinkable and not that bad - but well, not really a barleywine, just a strong lager.

Who comes up with this stuff? The aroma is the same as usual, and just as shallow. Taste isn't much better. What kind of fool buys this....?

Can from Yamaya, ¥198! One for now, one to age. Brown sugar, orange, bit of pine and caramel in the nose. Watery and candy like. Not very malty. Pale amber, clear. Strange color too. Thin, weak, candy like, peppery hops are nice, apple, pear, orange, bit of pine. Extremely thin and candy-ish malt character makes it hard to believe it is all-malt. Hops are pretty well done. Needs more body and richness. Not at all bad for a major attempt at this price, but not something to go back to.

Can pours out straw color topped with a white head. Nose is light corn grain notes a light grass hop. Taste is more of the light corn grain notes and a touch of grass.

Can from Lawson. Citrus nose, some honey and stone fruit esters. Deep go,den orange, clear, medium head. Quite sweet, orange, grapefruit, touch of caramel, honey. Slightly interesting tropical fruits as well. Crisp finish, rather high carbonation. Not bad. A bit too sweet.

Drunk from a can from family mart. Mild malty nose with a decent flavor that is malt forward but balanced with a bit of fruitiness and not too sweet. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
