Can at Matsukawa Saketen. A deep orange-gold with a thick head of white foam & surprisingly nice lacing. It has quite a sweet bready light malt nose. Light bodied with a pretty smooth mouthfeel. The taste is pretty crisp & clean, much better than I expected.

Can from Yamaya, about 210 yen.Served in a footed pilsner glass. It pours a crystal clear sparkling gold with a big soapy head of foam that leaves spotty lacing behind - nice. The nose has a big bready/crackery light milght chewiness to is overlaid with delicate floral & herbal saaz hoppiness - it brings to mind green growing vegetation a lush forest. Totally in a good way. Medium to light bodied with a round carbonation and crisp dry finish. The taste is solid crackery chewy light pilsner malt, a seriously deep earthiness and a herbal bitter bite with a small kick in the end. A surprisingly good pilsner from a major. It’s no Nihonkai Pils but it is the closest I’ve seen from a major to being a proper flavorful pils.

Can from Family Mart. Pours a deep, pretty red, clear, but with a fine airy head that reads something bad. Somewhat funky nose of cassis, biscuity malts, rose wine, a touch of honey and buttered bread. Weird, but not bad. flavor is tart and sweet cassis berries, creamy vanilla, wheat, and something a bit weird. not all that bad at all, though. A bit wine-like, a bit of alcohol. The berries are strong, and there is a bit of funk that is almost wild yeast, but it’s not, there is then a bit of chemical stuff that shows what this beer is made of. It almost transcended the shite category it is. Well done, better than expected, though could be great if it was only a real beer.

Can from Family Mart. Big noble hop nose. Grassy, lemony, light malt character. Clean and dry. Brilliant gold with a low, fine head. Great hop flavor. Very lemony and fresh. Grass. Solid pilsner malts. Light but sufficient bitterness. Dry, clean finish. This is a very good industrial pils. Quite lovely. Seems less sweet than the regular.

Can from Yamaya picked up awhile ago. Served in a dimpled mug. Pouring a deep-orange color verging on amber with a fizzy beige head that disappeared fairly fast. The aroma is sweet bready caramel with hints of stone fruits, possibly a bit too sweet but fairly nice. The body is pretty thin and the taste does not live up to the nose, the rough carbonation makes the sweetness come off as somewhat artificial and candyish, you get some graininess and some caramel but not much. I thought it might be past date but no it says good till May 2015 and made in September. Judging from other reviews which rated it more highly I am guessing this went downhill pretty fast. I preferred last year’s.

Suntory Premium Malt’s Dark, 5.5%, is a schwarzbier that pours a very dark cola brown with a beige hand with lacing that clings to the sides of the glass. The nose is soft chocolate with a mild nutty bite. Fairly thin bodied, the taste is mild chocolate, a bit of nuts plus some roasty notes. Decent.

Can from Family Mart. Malty nose, bread and biscuit, very low hopping. Deep golden color, pretty, with a medium, fine head. Malty, rich and bready, lightly bitter with a bit of lemon hop flavor. Quite rich and heavy body. Quite a good go at the Dortmunder Export style, really.
