About
The first record of the inn and brewery “Zum goldenen Engel” in Crailsheim from 1738 reads “annual production volume 150 buckets.” In 1877 George Fachs becomes the new owner of the brewery. The Fachs family still owns - now in the fifth generation - the brewery. In 1984 Engel becomes the first German brewery to bottle Radler. Since the turn of the millennium, Engel-Biermanufaktur has developed into a specialty brewery that regularly receives awards for its beers.

Sampled from 0.5 l bottle from local 'toom', best before May 2019. Clear, golden amber with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Sweetish, gently yeasty-spicy aroma of banana and clove. Quite sweet, malty, rather yeasty-spicy taste of banana, clove and hints of vanilla, followed by a short, moderately bitter, fairly yeasty-spicy and a bit metallic finish. Medium body, quite effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Not very good.

Aus der Schraubverschlussflasche. Dunkles Kupfer, ordentlicher Schaum. In der Nase süßlich, Malz. Im Trunk alkoholisch, malzig, süß, sehr unausgewogen, geradezu boozig, da fehlt es an Feinabstimmung. Dazu hinten recht flach. Schwache Performance.

0.33 l bottle from local 'toom', best before June 2019. Clear, golden with a thin, dense, stable, white head. Sweetish, slightly musty aroma of grains, some wort and traces of straw. Quite sweet, moderately bitter taste of grains, some wort and only hints of straw, followed by a short, slightly bitter, worty finish. Medium body, smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Drinkable, not bad.

0,5 l bottle from my local Hol´Ab! market. Clear red brown in the glass, nearly two finger pale beige head. Malty smell with fruity sweetness. Taste is also malty, some sweetness, caramell. Low toasted in the second part. Low but present hop. Quaffable stuff.

0,5 l bottle from my local Hol´Ab! market. Unclear dark brown in the glass, small one finger pale beige head. Yeast, wheat and fruity elements on the nose. Sweet berryfruity and caramell taste at the start. Later some wheat and yeast, low banana and sulfur. Getting a little bit dry in the second part. More on the thin side and can not fullfill all expectations.

Company own 0,5 l screw cap bottle. Pale copper in the glass, nearly two finger frothy white head. Cheap alcoholic smell with some caramell. Taste starts more smooth. Caramell, some malt, some fruity parts, less alcoholic sharpness than expected. Above average for an Heller Bock, but not good, to be honest.
