Cask at GBBF. Clear dark brown beer. Softish palate. Sourish malt with an odd spicy tone. Finishes dry. A bit odd.

Pours a deep brown, slightly cloudy with garnet highlights when held to light. Bubbly frothy tan head shows some staying power and lots of sticky lace. Heavy toffee and caramel on the nose with hints of butterscotch, light fruit, and ethanol. Faint hint of earthy hops, but this one smells like its a gonna be sweet. My nose certainly didn’t steer me wrong this is a sweet beer. Lots of toffee, butterscotch, caramel and brown sugar, bits of fruit and earthy hops. Medium to thick body with a moderate level of carbonation and a creamy sugary mouthfeel. This grew on me, but it really needs something else. Maybe some more hops, or something else to cut through the almost over bearing toffee sweetness.

Pours a clear golden amber with a huge bubbly off white head that slowly recedes and leaves a moderate amount of lace. Smells of earthy and floral hops, biscuity almost pilsner like malt aroma, with hints of citrus. Taste follow the nose fairly well, biscuity almost honey sweet malt with earthy citrus and floral hops to counter. Medium thin body with a bready sweet watery mouthfeel and a moderate to high level of carbonation. This is a really nice pale ale for 1998, but kind of pedestrian by today’s standards. Well made, nothing objectionable, but nothing really exciting here either. Kudos for bottle conditioning though!

Pours a solid dark brown color with a decent sized tan head that shows some persistence. Smells roasty and fruity with bits of earth and caramel strewn about. Taste follows the smell fairly well, but there is more caramel than coffee and roast. Dark dried fruits and caramels are quite prevalent almost dopplebock like qualities. Medium to thick body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick sweet burnt sugary mouthfeel. This is not a bad beer, but it really needs some more roast and some chocolate flavor would help as well.

On draft @ the Barley Pub in Dover, NH. Served in a pint glass. Deep brown in color, small head with very light lace. Malt nose with a bit of earthy tones. Caramel, roasted malt and light hops. Has a light sweet caramel finish. Drinkable any season of the year. Not the best in the style I have tried but, respectable.

On tap @ The Page, Portsmouth, NH Color was a pale yellow color, small layer of white head, nearly no lacing. Light grapefruit on the nose. Taste was of malt and slight grapefruit hops. No bitterness at all, which I like a lot. High carbonation the left the mouth dry on the finish. Even with the dry finish it leaves you thirsting for more. Easy drinker. I could drink large amounts of this and feel no shame.

12 oz bottle. Pours a deep brown with small tan head. Very nice lacing in my pint glass. Looks much like other ordinary stouts. Palate is a bit thin for a stout with low carbonation. Nose is malt, barley and chocolate. Flavor is mostly roasted malt with a hint of bitter chocolate. Let this warm to near room temperature for best flavor. Over all very standard. But still drinkable and clean.

Picked up a sixer of this today and had one after shoveling the driveway. Pours a solid brown that shows some ruby highlights when held up to the light. Two finger off white head that dissipates quickly and leaves minimal lacing on the way down the glass. Smell is a bit roasty, chocolatey and some caramel thrown in there too. Taste follows the smell, but adds a hop bite in the finish. Medium thick creamy smooth mouthfeel with adequate carbonation. I am pleasantly surprised this is a great little session brew from an up and coming local company.

Bottle. Mildly fruity and roasted aroma, OK combination. Hazy dark brown colour. Small stable light brown head. The flavour is roasted and tart. A bit too tart, perhaps.
