09/06/2019 @home - 33cl bottle from a trade with jerre. Clear ruby brown, big light tanned head. Nosei is dark malts, cara, DMS. Taste, dark malts, cara, bit nutty, DMS, bit spices. Couldve been quite nice otherwise except for the DMS.

The new, dark counterpart of Real Love, a ‘massieve ale’ with similar label as the blonde one, tasted at the Pier of Blankenberge, its home town even if neither of these ‘Blankenbergse’ beers are actually brewed there. Medium thick, frothy, moussy, pale greyish beige head lacing in dots over a misty, translucent amber-hued ruddy bronze beer with strong visible fizz. Aroma of old hazelnuts, acorns, quite outspoken DMS (overcooked red cabbage), wet toast, coriander seed, beetroot, old apples, caramel, dried fig, salsify, damp earth, glue, gin, some vague iron. Sweetish onset, candied fig, raisin, light banana ester, sourish undertone, medium carbonation (softer than the blonde one, which was clearly overcarbonated even for a classically styled Belgian ale). Slick and bit resinous mouthfeel, very caramelly body, sweet with a peanutty edge as well as very light toasty bitterishness in the finish; earthy, powdery yeastiness in the tail as well, bready with lingering caramel sweetness and a tea-ish, herbal, earthy hop bitterishness. Coriander note and a warming afterglow of ‘jenever’-like alcohol complete the flavour ‘parcours’. Like the blonde one, a trivial, old-fashioned Belgian ale with not much more relevance than commercial appeal to the visitors of Blankenberge, suffering from too much DMS as well, but otherwise sufficient for what it intends to be.

The first beer by this young brewing company in Blankenberge at the Belgian sea side, sold in several pubs and shops throughout the city. Thick and frothy, egg-white, dense head towering over a misty, warm peach-tinged golden beer with vivid sparkling, becoming very murky and beige-ish with the yeast sediment added. Aroma of straw, old bread, banana, raw potatoes, turnip, coriander seed, dried apricot, minerals, dough and some light DMS (overcooked cauliflower). Restrainedly sweetish onset with a sourish note reinforced by sharp, even painfully stinging overcarbonation; basic flavour notes of light banana and unripe pear against a doughy, cereally pale malt sweetish background. Slick, lean mouthfeel, dry in the end due to the dryish basic profile combined with quite leafy, mildly spicy, floral hop bitterness and a touch of coriander soapiness; lingering cereally maltiness. Just hoppy enough not to become too boring, but otherwise a very stereotypical Belgian blonde as there are thirteen in a dozen already. Appeals to the traditional audience seeking a ‘locally made beer’ so they have the advantage of being able to represent the city of Blankenberge that way, but I do not see this achieving more than mere local relevance.

Bottle Pours unclear, darker amber. Medium sized head, low to medium stability. Smell is malty ( white bread, very mild doughy notes) and yeasty ( some esthers, ofcourse ). Taste has a nice level of bitterness, compared to the Belgian average, but very much esthers and phenols. To the point it almost turns what I call ’plastic’. Medium spiced flavors. Even though i prefer most beers to be bitter, I feel like this much esthers and phenols really call for something more to the sweet side. it would be very bland, of course, since we have 100’s of those already in Belgium, but in a nice bitter beer, I simply prefer less yeastyness. Average body and carbo.

Pretty cloudy orange beer, lots of small brown chunks in the glass. Aroma: malty, some caramel, bit fruity, floral touch, apricots, some citrus, hint of tropical fruits. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty oxidized, fruity, pretty bitter as well, some citrus, honey, bit sweet, malty touch. Aftertaste: some caramel, malty, bitter and hoppy finish, bit fruity, some banana and yeast. Decent. Probably better when fresh.
