Jennings (Marston's)
Regional Brewery
in Cockermouth,
Cumbria,
England 🏴
Owned by
Carlsberg Britvic
Established in 2005
Closed in 2022
In 2009, the Cockermouth floods had a huge impact on the business and the site, forcing Marston’s to implement flood safety features and barricades throughout the site. A few short years after the floods, brewing transferred out of the town and a mass rebrand occurred.
Marston's retrained ownership of the brewery (through Carlsberg UK) until it closed its doors in November 2022

Dark red-brown colour. Aroma of roasted malts. Flavour is rather bitterbut has enough complexity of malt and hop to carry it off. Overall a nice bitter with a good malt flavour.

Cask/GBBF. Dark brown with a lasting, creamy off-white head. Caramel, toffee aroma, with some butter, some grass and birchwood. Sweet and toffee filled flavour, and a rich cappucino finish.

Rich, dark brown colour. Aroma of roasted malt and dark fruits. Flavoutr is quite bitter with some woody, oaky notes. The dryness of this one is a bit demanding on the pallet but overall it’s a good bitter.

Cask at The Anchor, Southwark, London.
Pours a clear amber colour with nice creamy head and malty nose. The taste is mild roasted malt, coffee and milk chocolate with some hoppy notes in the finish. Very nice brew.

Bottle from Morrisons. Mahogany coloured with a dent off-white , lacy head. Fruity malt aroma with some roasted notes, and a hint of spice. The flavour was malty with a slightly salty savoury edge and a touch of chocolate. Decent bitter finish. Very enjoyable.

Bottle from Waitrose, 08-11-07 Pours amber in colour, with small white head. Aroma a bit malty with some sweetness. Tasted quite underwhelming at first soft mouthfeel some hops did appear at the end, and whilst it was fine it was no great shakes.

500ml bottle bought at Waitrose, Hythe, Kent - about as far as you can get from the brewery while still being in England! Reddish amber with a thin white head; aroma like it says on the bottle - chocolate, malt and nuts; deep and chewy malts give a chocolate flavour with a dry biscuity finish; extremely moreish. An interesting beer, part bitter, part stout in character.

Cask@GBBF2007. Golden colour, not much head. Aroma is lots of caramel, some wood and really smooth grassyness. Flavour is mainly nectar, caramel and wood in a really nice and harmonic balance.
