Description
The Dortmunder Union Brewery (DUB) was established in 1873, the first brewmaster was Fritz Brinkhoff (1848-1927), who worked 50 years for the brewery. In 1887, a failed brew was delivered to a customer in Aachen which was a huge success. The Dortmunder Export was born.

In 1994, the Union Brewery took over the Dortmund Ritter Brewery, established in 1889, and renamed itself the Dortmund Union Ritter Brewery. Production was relocated from the city center to the previous production facility of the Ritter brewery on the outskirts in Lütgendortmund. In 2002 the Union-Ritter-Brauerei was renamed the Brinkhoff Brewery, and in 2006 production was relocated to the Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei.

Soft milky and malty aroma. Medium bodied with a soft bitterness, also in the aftertaste. Solid, but uneventful beer.

Nice malty flowery aroma. Hoppy, somewhat flowery flavor. Light bitter aftertaste with just a hint of metal. The aroma is nice, the flavor kinda average.

Bought in Gronau. I have good memories attached to this beer. I’ve visited the now closed Ritter Brauerei for trade meetings in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The barman tapped Ritter pils for a Deutschmark and you got the glass for free. But after 1 or 2 I had enough (didn’t like the beer too much) and asked Czech visitors who’d brought their local beers to trade a bottle for an in those days very welcome Deutschmark. My only chance to taste Czech beers in those days. Have the Ritter beers become better in taste? Not really. A somewhat flowery aroma. A bit harsh bitter, metallic flavor. Not a fresh hoppy bitterness, but oilier with hints of butter. Long metallic bitter aftertaste. Again: disappointing.

This beer is very hard to find on tap, Dortmunder assured me. Tasted in a Dortmund pub on the Market Square, in the good company of Dortmunder. Peach aroma. The flavor is totally different. Strong caramelly flavor with just a touch of roast. Some caramelly bitterness in the aftertaste. The giant gave it its best shot, but didn’t succeed entirely.

330ml bottle. Clear, orangey, dark golden colour with average, thick, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Plain, bitter hoppy and minimally sweet-ish, bready malty aroma, reminds me of dregs at a roofing ceremony in the late 70s. Taste is minimally sweet, bready and grainy malty, doughy yeasty, plain bitter hoppy overtones. Out of the days when beer was consumed for alcoholic impact not for enjoyment of taste.
