Description

Slowly gushing to huge yellowish head, quite stable over very carbonated mossy sheened copper beer. Green herbs & weeds, greenmalt, lightly coloured malts, caramel, spicy & yeasty. Very slightly burning MF, caramel, wry-ish bitter, ink, caramel with the sweetness knocked out, meatcrust. Medium to well-bodied, very carbonated; quite dry character. Not bad, but - gives an unfinished feel. Thanks to Stef!

'Pils' (Pilsener) from En Stoemelings in collaboration with Blind Enthusiasm, one of the countless young Canadian microbreweries. Longneck bottle of less than five months old. Snow white, mousy, irregularly and lightly lacing head, quite creamy, medium thick and well-retaining; initially lightly hazy, warm 'old gold' robe with ochre-ish hue, deeper ochre-blonde and misty with sediment. Not unpleasant aroma of freshly crushed lemonbalm leaves, camomile flowers, margarine, moist white pepper, white bread dough, dried lemon zest, freshly cut hogweed stems, (unsugared) cream, wet gypsum, subtle sweet melon touch. Crisp, minerally onset yet carbonation - for the intended style - remains fairly soft; fruity notes from the yeast, but only restrainedly so, vaguely hinting at pear and unripe banana; mineral aspects accompany a very soft and supple, bit soapy and fluffy malt body, white-bready pale malt sweetishness with sharper grainy edges but the breadiness - especially after adding the yeast sediment, of course - remains quite important till the end, where it is coated in a somewhat 'greenish' and resinous, firmly bittering in a very floral and 'weedy' way, with a quinine-like, long-lasting tail, outbalancing the bready softness - the way it ought to be in a good Pilsener, I'd say. Due to being unfiltered, the yeast adds a lot of breadiness, softness, aroma and flavour, to the point where it is more akin to a (admittedly atypical) Kellerbier than a true classic Pilsener in the original Bohemian style, a bit reminiscent of another recent Belgian lager born in the new craft beer culture, Dok Brewing's Lederhosen Und Dirndls. Powerful yet thoroughly 'noble' hoppiness, full and even bit creamy mouthfeel, pleasant aroma: this is among the best lagers Belgium - not commonly associated with bottom fermentation and justly so - has produced in a long time, in my opinion. Better than expected, better than most other En Stoemelings beers I had so far even (which could be that Canadian microbrewer's contribution if I look at it a bit cynically), deserving a higher rating here.
