Description

Sampled from bottle @ late RBBSG. A bit unclear yellow color, average sized off-white head. Smell and taste malts, sweetish, light orange / orangepeel. Decent body and carbonation. Not too bad actually, but there were different sounds during the tasting.

Shared @ Koelschtrinker's tasting. Fruity smooth beginning. Easy to drink, fruity and refreshing with a nice smooth grainy body. Sessionable with caramel and fruits there, very smooth and mild in the aftertaste. Round and sessionable with caramelly dry depth.

Wheat beer (or rather a 'tarwedubbel', to use a very old-fashioned term) made for the first anniversary of this brewery, bottle from my cellar, no idea where I bought it... Medium thick, coarse, bit irregular, egg-white head leaving little lacing and opening in the middle, over misty ochre-tinged golden beer with lots of translucent yeast dots throughout. Aroma of wet old bread, moldy oranges, cold French fries, tulips, damp earth, stewed pear, spoiled leek soup, pond water teeming with green algae, mud even, brown soap, cooked Brussels sprouts cooled in a fridge, green apple, cold camomile tea, parsnip, sweetclover, dusty old coriander seed. Fruity onset, hinting at stewed apple, pear and pineapple but restrained in sweetness, sourish edge, medium to rather low carbonation for the style, supple and lean body. Slick white-bready, wheaty base with cereally sides but the breadiness increases a bit towards the finish due to the yeast, eventually turning a tad starchy, yet drenched in a firm, rooty, leafy hop bitterishness, nothing too harsh nor aromatically expressive, but rooty and to the point, along with a dash of phenolic and subtle coriander spiciness as well as a vague zesty note. Earthy finish, but bready and 'fluffy' too, bready and notably 'Belgian' phenolic (cloves, even a very slight nod at 'medicinality' somewhere) with a dash of spoiled leek soup-like hoppiness thrown in, also applying a confident, medium long, oily bitterness to the whole. Very earthy wheat ale, more an American style wheat ale than a true Belgian witbier really, in view of the relative cleanness and especially the firm, lingering, bit resiny hop bitterness. Quite easily drinkable, modern and decent, but a bit less of that clayish 'Belgian' yeastiness would suit this beer better - apart from the fact that American-style wheat ale seems a weird choice for an anniversary beer. Passes, but I don't get a celebration effect from this bottle, not in comparison with Stoemelings' other beers either even if this brewery, one of the 'nouvelle vague' microbrewers in and around Brussels, has failed to impress me so far - their labels are often more refined and classy than their beers.
