25/VIII/18 - sample @ BXL Beer Festival - BB: n/a (2018-1120) Thanks to the Belgian and Dutch Ratebeer crews for sharing today's beers!
Rather cloudy yellow beer, small creamy white head, little stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: grains, malty and cow fodder, but also a bit citric, some fresh cut grass, hoppy. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: very malty start, bitter hops, grains, hay, bit grassy. Aftertaste: hint of citrus, hoppy, grassy, malty, cow fodder, dry and bitter finish, good one! Probably one of the most bitter, definitely one of the best En Stoemelings so far!

At BXL festival. Hazy pale yellow straw with white head. Dry grassy hops, very dry malts and wheat, soft earthy hops, lemon peel. Barely any sweetness, quite bitter. Over light bodied with a bit dry feel.

En Stoemelings' take on the old witbier style, longneck bottle from Fermenthings. Intricately cobweb-lacing, egg-white, medium thick, stable head over a misty straw blonde beer with vague khaki tinge. Aroma of fresh lime juice and old lemon zest, sourdough, Granny Smith apple, raw rhubarb, sorrel, hard pear, unripe banana, school chalk, pumice, summer purslane, chervil soup, freshly cut thistles, starfruit, less pleasant smoky phenols especially when warming up, fresh coriander leaves, bath foam, even a touch of ladies' perfume. Crisp, fruity onset, lots of Granny Smith apple and Conférence pear, some raw pineapple, starfruit and green banana, restrainedly sweetish with a strong sourish aspect enhanced by lively, minerally carbonation; lean, supple, soapy mouthfeel. Soapy wheatiness dominates the middle with those green fruits persisting, white bread dough aspect, dryish, very grassy and 'green' herbal finish with a touch of coriander or other dried seed spiciness but more brightly coloured by a lemongrass effect, aromatic and sourish, with a chalky note underneath. Minerally, chalky, sourish, elegant and notably refreshing example of an old and worn-out style, enjoyable, but not En Stoemelings' most impressive creation so far - but that could be just me, not being a big fan of witbier in general. Within its specific style, this is rather innovative and refreshing for sure.
