Description
Conceived during a Sunday afternoon pint, David Edwards brewed his first batch of Nemesis in May 2005. The brewery now produces 9 different real ales regularly in our 4.5 barrel plant based in the Staffordshire Moorlands. The beers take their names from the surrounding area as the brewery looks out across Dimmingsdale Wood, home of the Chained Oak towards the village of Alton.

Cask at Swan, Stone. Pours a bright golden yellow with a small off-white head and good lacing. Just some vague maltiness in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy. Initially the flavour is mainly malts and tangerine, but with some traditional hops lurking underneath. After a while it becomes more bitter with lemongrass and hints of pine. Bitterness lasts into the finish. This isn’t wildly exciting, but it is decent and certainly very refreshing.

Cask at Seven Stars, Derby (not listed in RateBeer). Pours a bright burnished copper with a small white head and good lacing. Aroma is not overstrong, but is a curious mixture of nuts and ice cream. In the mouth it starts off malty with a caramel base, but in due course old school hops come through, along with marmalade. A hint of almonds too. Finish is dry. A nice old style beer – simplicity well done.

Handpull cask at the Creaky Floorboard, Derby. Dark brown, translucent with a ring of khaki head. Chocolate malt aroma with notes of liquorice. Sweet taste with a light sourness, chocolate with touches of molasses and yeast extract. Flat carbonation. Pretty good.

Cask at Creaky Floorboard, Derby. Pours almost black with a minimal beige head. Has a decent aroma of roasted malts and coal. In the mouth the dominant flavour is milky coffee, aloing with chocolate and liquorice and hints of vanilla and dried fruit. The liquorice lingers in the malty finish. This beer is very agreeable.

Cask @ The Crown, Oakengates during covid restrictions. Misty amber, off-white head. Aroma is weedy. Taste is a little sour, vinegar notes, cardboard, bitter. Probably not at its freshest. Rated objectively.

Cask pint @ Snuggery Tap, Newport, Shropshire. Pours amber, with a well-appointed off-white collar atop. Aroma presents some lightly sweet malt. Soft on the palate, with a gentle airy amber malt character and a soft best better sweetness carrying through, light bitterness. Good pintworthy stuff.

Cask at Last Post, Derby Pours a pale yellow with very little head. Nose is vaguely lemony, but unpleasant – washing up liquid maybe ? In the mouth it is basically bland with very little going on – just some lemon hints. There are some hops in the finish, but they fade to a nasty “bitter lemon” aftertaste. Won’t be drinking this one again.

3rd Jan 2019; cask, hand-pulled half-pint at The Crown Inn, Oakengates, Shropshire. Pale golden body, clean and clear, white head that gave lacing. Sadly I found this a little bland with not much going on aroma or taste wise, more of a summer quaffing ale than a cold winters day offering. Basically a weak blend of malts and hops with no real flavours to get my senses excited.
