About
The last brewery in Hoegaarden, Tomsin, closed shop in 1957. Soon after, in 1965, the villagers decided to take action to preserve the original recipe. Milkman Pierre Celis decided to grasp the nettle and started brewing up a batch in his milk shed, using only a copper boiler. Because of the great success he quickly expanded his operation and moved into a bigger building – ‘De Kluis’ (The Vault) – a subtle nod to the monks. By 1985 the nod was no longer subtle as he was making more than 75.000 hectolitres per year. Just as he was about to start exporting to the United States, a large fire shattered his dreams (and the beer). The brewery was destroyed.
Since 1985, the brand has been part of Artois brewery, which provided fresh capital, after the fire. After the takeover, the recipe was changed to appeal to a wider audience and save on raw materials. The Artois brewery, which had already been absorbed into InBev (nowadays Aneuser-Busch InBev) for some time, decided in 2006 to close the brewery and move production to Jupille. On September 10, 2007, it was announced that Hoegaarden would once again be brewed in Hoegaarden. The brewery in Jupille didn't manage to imitate the typical taste of Hoegaarden...

Can from Tesco Inverurie. It pours cloudy golden - with a thick, fluffy white head. The aroma is sweet, lemonade, shandy vibes, wheat, spicy, coriander seeds and hotdog brine. The taste is really rather sweet upfront, sugary, lemonade, wheat beer shandy, bready, savoury feel, herbal, coriander, hotdog brine, dill pickles, cracker and grass is a bitter - sweet finish. Medium body and moderate, fluffy. Weird savoury vibes to it, yet also very sweet. Disappointing tbh.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Pours a hazy amber colour with a medium sized throthy off-white head. Aromas of banana, cloves, coriander, pear and peppery spice. Taste has the same notes as the aroma with some added caramel, hints of floral and a little brown sugar. Medium bodied with a fairly smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Nice one.

Rocky off white head left a foamy cover on a dark amber body. Spices, tea & caramel aroma. Medium bodied, smooth with clean back. Bitter/sweet dried fruits, spices, tea, malt & caramel tastes. Similar to an English Ale.

Als cadeau gekregen op 13-08-2019. En thuis geproefd op 26-09-2020. Heb hem al eens geproefd in januari 2014 maar nu dus nog eens geproefd.
Julius wordt sinds 2012 gebrouwen in de brouwerij van Hertog Jan in Acren (Nederland) en gebotteld in Hoegaarden in opdracht van AB Inbev.
JULIUS is een helder en goudblond bier dat een normale hoeveelheid wit schuim produceert in de vorm van een gelijkmatige fijne laag. Het blijft sterk aan de glaswand kleven maar zakt nadien in elkaar tot er nog slechts een fijn laagje van ongeveer 1mm dikte overblijft. Je ziet maar weinig CO2 pareling met fijne belletjes. Op de bodem van het flesje blijft wat gistdepot achter.
HET AROMA:
Zoetig, banaan, licht zoete dadel, mout, houttint, koriander en na wat opgewarmd te zijn ook een lichte alcoholtint.
DE SMAAK:
Zoetig, zeer licht bitterig, mout, koriander en een lichte alcoholtoets.
HET MONDGEVOEL:
Volle body met een zeer klein bitterdroogje en een stoffige textuur. Normale koolzuurgasprikkeling.
DE NASMAAK:
Vloeit wat uit en is wederom zoetig, zelfs wat licht plakkerig, een houttintje dat wat langer blijft hangen, koriander en een kleine alcoholtoets.
HET TOTAALGEVOEL:
Een complex en licht-verwarmend bier.
HET VERDICT:
Mijn flesje is al meer dan een jaar oud maar hij proeft nu beter dan in 2014, hij is wat zoeterig, moutig met nog wat alcohol. Ook de houttinten zijn te waarderen.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Pours a murky golden/amber colour with a thin white head. Aromas of bananas, doughy bread, spice, bubblegum and hints of orange. Taste has more bananas, oranges, bread, bubblegum and peppery spice. Light to medium body, average carbonation, smooth oily palate with a fruity and spicy finish. A little hint of warming alcohol. Could do with a little more body but a nice beer.

750ml bottle and my first Belgian Witbeir, well it had to be Hoegaarden didn't it!. Cloudy pale yellow with big foamy head that leaves a good retention. Aroma of yeasty banana, coriander and spice. Taste of wheat, fruity zest, mild spice and a decent malt base to hold it together. Lightish body but refreshing. I vaguely remember having this 10 years ago and finding it with too much flavour as a lager drinker. How times change! Very nice indeed.
