Description
The last brewery in Hoegaarden, Tomsin, closed shop in 1957. Soon after, in 1965, the villagers decided to take action to preserve the original recipe. Milkman Pierre Celis decided to grasp the nettle and started brewing up a batch in his milk shed, using only a copper boiler. Because of the great success he quickly expanded his operation and moved into a bigger building – ‘De Kluis’ (The Vault) – a subtle nod to the monks. By 1985 the nod was no longer subtle as he was making more than 75.000 hectolitres per year. Just as he was about to start exporting to the United States, a large fire shattered his dreams (and the beer). The brewery was destroyed.

Since 1985, the brand has been part of Artois brewery, which provided fresh capital, after the fire. After the takeover, the recipe was changed to appeal to a wider audience and save on raw materials. The Artois brewery, which had already been absorbed into InBev (nowadays Aneuser-Busch InBev) for some time, decided in 2006 to close the brewery and move production to Jupille. On September 10, 2007, it was announced that Hoegaarden would once again be brewed in Hoegaarden. The brewery in Jupille didn't manage to imitate the typical taste of Hoegaarden...

250 ml bottle. Raspberry aroma, a bit artificial and flat taste. Slight bitterness from the Witbier. Yeasty and sweet. Refreshing and easy to drink. Sweetener rather dominant though, which is quite annoying. Nothing special.

Bottled 250ml. -from Geant Albertville. Lemonade yellow coloured, small white head, kiwi in the nose. Artificial and perfumed kiwi, vaugly mint and surprisingly not so sugary with dry dusty finish. Not good, Marko is obviously drunk;)))

Medium white head, light yellow, cloudy. Aroma of citrus, coriander, spices. Refreshing. Taste is similar: citrus, coriander, spices, oranges. Watery. High carbonation. Refreshing and drinkable. Tasty beer.

From my backlog. Pale golden color with a white head with short duration. Aroma has notes of lemon and lime. Slightly acidic inside mouth, mild presence of lemon, light of lime. A soft-drink that want to be a beer.

Thanks Ogi! Shared with Iznogud. Paaaaale milky yellow, murky, small white head. Actually lovely aroma, kiwi jam, vaguely minty. Ok, fake, but I’m actually really digging this. Taste, soft, pleasant, jam-like, subtle sugary notes rounded up by mint. OK, this sucks as a beer, but one of the best soft drinks around. Love the combo, very well executed. There, I said it.

0.33l bottle. Slightly hazy golden body with a huge and lasting white head. Aroma of banana, bread, peach, orange zest and some coriander. Taste of bread, sugar syrup, banana, cloves and some spicy hops. It is almost like a good weizenbock, only a bit spicier. I like it.
