Gravity cask at the 2016 Cambridge Beer Festival. Purplish-brown, very translucent with a loose cream-coloured head. Oak and berry in the aroma with a harsh astrigency. The vanilla comes out in spades for the sweet warming taste. Like a root beer float, there’s a slight spiciness in the finish. Thin body. Ok but not one of TBM’s better efforts.

Half, cask at The Scottish Stores, King Cross. A wheat haze to a orange-gold body. Dissipating white head. Mid-sweet fruity nose added by a spicy touch. Taste of mild apricot joined by wheat and mild spices. Rather sweet fruity ending. Easy going (London 10.04.2016).

The alcohol is very well hidden. Hoppy and resinous. Looks like an old skool IPA. True to style. Really great beer.

Gravity cask at the Drayman’s Son, Ely. Brownish black with a tidy ring of tan head. Whisky, lapsong souchong, liquorice and stone fruit make up the enticing bouquet. Taste is sweet with a sour whisky bite. Lots of liquorice and heavily roasted malt in the aftertaste. Medium to full silky body. Very nice.

Gravity cask at Drayman’s Son, Ely. Slightly reddish light brown, clear with little visible carbonation. Pineapple and mango to the fore of the nose with pine, resin and bubblegum notes. The initial taste is ambrosially sweet, but the finish is intense, long and dry. Thick oily body. Everything a cask IPA should be. This brewery just gets better and better.

Manchester Beer & Cider Festival 2016. Clouded amber-yellow, but closer to the latter. Unfined but still packs plenty of taste, mildly fruity with a fair wheat style in an ale texture.

Cask at the Cambridge Blue. Dark yellow and cloudy as you like. Lemon, toasted marshmallow, biscuit spread, hay on the perfect aroma. Taste is less balanced. A string bitter-sour overlays the sweet hop fruitiness. This has a lot going for it but it’s nicer to sniff than drink.

Cask from the Townhouse, Ely. Reddish copper with a medium beige head. Jasmine, wood bark and a slight vinous note in the aroma. Juicy sweet taste with slight tannic bitter in the finish. Hints of tea and stone fruit. Medium to full body. As twiggy brown bitters go, this one is ace.
