Description
We came up with the notion of opening a brewery while homebrewing one Saturday morning in Curt's garage. We had one simple idea we wanted to live by. Take the ideas and concepts of old world Belgian breweries and blend them with modern brewing techniques and styles. The result is a brewery full of unique beer, brewed without traditional rules, and often using fresh seasonal ingredients.

It took months of long nights and hard work to build the brewery, but in December 2012 we officially opened our doors. We had a stubbornness to build everything our self and this mindset went all the way to Curt Kucera designing his own brewing equipment. This would ultimately be the starting groundwork for what would become Ss Brewtech the following year.

In the coming years we signed on to distribution with Stone Brewing and began to distribute our beers throughout California. In 2015, we became the fastest growing production brewery in California. In 2016, Refuge became the largest brewery in Temecula and all of Riverside county. That same year we leased the suite next door (11,000 sqft total) to take the brewery to the next level.

Poured up on tap at Refuge where it exhibits a clear copper body that has thin gold edges and supports a thin white head. The aroma offers up mango and tangelo fruity hop notes as well as a dash of onion like dank hops and sweet maltiness in the background. The taste starts with sweet malts and then heads into a little bit of spicy garlic and onion like dank hoppiness that quickly picks up citrus and a bit of mango tropical fruity hop flavor. This achieves a nice balance of resiny bitter hoppiness and malt sweetened hop flavor, pretty solid. Yeah, I can drink more of this. Yum.

Poured up on tap at Refuge where it exhibits an opaque deep gold body that supports an off white head of foam. The aroma offers up a little bit of Belgian inspired yeasty estery fruitiness that seems apple, pear and a bit banana like before a little bit of vague hoppiness shows up at the end of the draw. The taste is smooth and then moves into grapefruit and tangelo citrusy hops and then it gets a little mango like before modest sweet yeasty Belgian estery apple and pear notes hit about midway. It ends with a mild dryness that seems to start with a sliver of earthy tea like hop notes. Pretty solid Belgian IPA where, after a few ounces, I start to notice resiny pine notes popping up here and there.

Poured up on tap at Refuge where it exhibits a deep gold body that has thin copper hues and supports a light tan head that leaves behind spotty lacing. The aroma offers up grapefruit and tangelo hops that are sweetened a bit by thin maltiness and a bit of mango seems to be lurking in there as well. The taste starts with a pretty decent body and then unleashes grapefruit and tangelo and tangerine like citrus hoppiness that bleeds into more bitter to slightly resiny hop notes to midway. Then it sweetens up a tad to help bring on the full fruity hop flavor and modest bitterness into the finish. This is a wonderful session beer. A few more ounces consumed and a bit warmer brew I start to pick up some spicy hops that are a just a bit dank and earthy tea like. Wow. I love the body and harmonious hops.

Draft at the brewery taproom - Temecula. Shared with GT2. Pretty standard big, Belgian affair. Sweet with bready malts, some toffee, stewed apples. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish, lightly warming, with more bread and toffee. Kind of meh but not altogether bad.
