Description
We came up with the notion of opening a brewery while homebrewing one Saturday morning in Curt's garage. We had one simple idea we wanted to live by. Take the ideas and concepts of old world Belgian breweries and blend them with modern brewing techniques and styles. The result is a brewery full of unique beer, brewed without traditional rules, and often using fresh seasonal ingredients.

It took months of long nights and hard work to build the brewery, but in December 2012 we officially opened our doors. We had a stubbornness to build everything our self and this mindset went all the way to Curt Kucera designing his own brewing equipment. This would ultimately be the starting groundwork for what would become Ss Brewtech the following year.

In the coming years we signed on to distribution with Stone Brewing and began to distribute our beers throughout California. In 2015, we became the fastest growing production brewery in California. In 2016, Refuge became the largest brewery in Temecula and all of Riverside county. That same year we leased the suite next door (11,000 sqft total) to take the brewery to the next level.

Can from Bine & Vine. Pours translucent light gold with a white head. Aroma does seem to be grapefruit. Med body or so. Flavor is light slightly toasty caramel with citrus and arguably grapefruit, maybe even zest. It’s nice, it’s dry, it’s bitter, it’s "spicy/zesty", but I’d like grapefruit juice, let alone rind. All that bitchin’ aside, it’s bitter! Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On tap at the brewery. It pours a lightly hazed orange color with an off white head. The aroma is wine-like with some plum and buttery barrel notes. The flavor is sweet and grapey with a little pepper and light acidity. Lots of grape. No alcohol burn is a plus. The grapes cover over much of the base beer. Pretty fun to try.

On tap at the brewery. It pours a clear pale yellow color with a white head. The aroma is bright and peppery with some papaya and doughy malt. The flavor is the same with more pepper and papaya. Good medium body and mouth feel. Carbonation is spot on. It has a balanced subtly peppery floral bitter finish. Pretty tasty.

On nitro at the brewery. It pours black with a light tan head. The aroma is very chocolaty with hints of carmamel, vanilla and bourbon. The flavor is the same. Really nice creamy, woody dark chocolate with vanilla, nuts and a roasted bitter finish that balances the sweetness. Oh man.

On tap at the brewery. It pours a semi cloudy pink color with a pink head. The aroma is fresh with sweet raspberries and a hint of seediness. The flavor is huge with raspberry. Lots of sweet and sour fruit. Lemony tartness in the background and silky on the palate. Not much else going on, but cleaner than the plum or cranberry. Pretty tasty.
