Description
We came up with the notion of opening a brewery while homebrewing one Saturday morning in Curt's garage. We had one simple idea we wanted to live by. Take the ideas and concepts of old world Belgian breweries and blend them with modern brewing techniques and styles. The result is a brewery full of unique beer, brewed without traditional rules, and often using fresh seasonal ingredients.

It took months of long nights and hard work to build the brewery, but in December 2012 we officially opened our doors. We had a stubbornness to build everything our self and this mindset went all the way to Curt Kucera designing his own brewing equipment. This would ultimately be the starting groundwork for what would become Ss Brewtech the following year.

In the coming years we signed on to distribution with Stone Brewing and began to distribute our beers throughout California. In 2015, we became the fastest growing production brewery in California. In 2016, Refuge became the largest brewery in Temecula and all of Riverside county. That same year we leased the suite next door (11,000 sqft total) to take the brewery to the next level.

On at at the brewery on 10th Feb 2017. Clean and clear golden pour, white topping. Thirst quencher before attacking the heavier brews on offer. Can’t say I noticed any wine like influence but it was refreshing and smooth to drink. Very little harshness or bitterness, though, so maybe less hops than normal for the style.

10th Feb 2017. On tap at the brewery, part of a flight. Pale and hazy pour, wispy head. Really yeasty aroma, with that special Belgian like nose that just reminds you of that country’s beers. Fairly sweet, my sweet tooth taking to the brew straight away. Liked it.

10th Feb 2017. On tap at the brewery, part of a flight. Golden pour, white head on top. Citrus centric brew with some maltiness trying to break through in the nose and taste, all but failing to do so. A bit dry for my palate, but certainly refreshing and ’crisp’.

10th Feb 2017. On tap at the brewery, part of a flight. More amber than red, clean and clear pour, no head. Like most American Red/Amber brews this had a malty lead and semi-sweetness that dominated the hop content. Bready, toasty, biscuity and caramel notes in the nose and taste, my sweet tooth likes this sort of beer. The hops did show towards the finish, giving a slight bitter end, but this is a malty beer really.

Pours bright orange, even a bit reddish. Aroma is not really what I expected, feels sort of too usual. Just bready. Taste has loads of grapefruit, not much else. Grapefruit seed bitterness in the finish. Not bad but also not among the best grapefruit IPA’s I have had.

GBBF Day 3. Cask. Hazy gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and has low carbonation. Smooth pale malts, pretty sweet. Mellow grapefruit and light orange. Light finish. A sweetish IPA lacking condition. Okay.
