Draft at Odd Side, and Michigan rating #1000. Translucent light straw-brown body, thin off-white head. Very light, nearly imperceptible nose with light fig and grain. Grainy body with earthy, nutty fig, grain and slight bitterness. Clean and quaffable. When I first joined Ratebeer, the prospect of sampling 1000 beers brewed in my home state was improbable. It’s been fun and a bit overwhelming to witness the growth of the state’s brewing industry since 2003. Cheers to the entrepeneurs, brewers, and imbibers who made this happen. Here’s to another 1000 Michigan brews.

Re-rate 24 Feb 2014: I’ve enjoyed this beer a couple times since my initial sample and it deserves a reevaluation. Creamy, well-balanced, and flavorful, this is one of the most enjoyable coffee stouts on the market right now.
Original rating: Draft at Graydon’s Crossing, Grand Rapids. Opaque red-brown body, thin tan head. Nose of chocolate and coffee beans. Ashy body with hints of vanilla; mostly roasted to burnt coffee beans, acidic roast, and dark chocolate. Thin and chalky but not bad (7-3-6-3-13).

Draft at HopCat, Grand Rapids. Slightly hazy medium orange-brown body, thin creamy off-white head. Light nose with pineapple and citrus. Light, hoppy body, mostly citrusy, bitter hops with modest pineapple. Lingering bitter finish with a long citrus rind aftertaste. The pineapple was a nice touch to a basic IPA.

On tap at Odd Side. Pours a deepish red/brown with little head. Aromas are kinda musty and sour (balsamic vinegar). Flavor is pretty odd... I was expecting a bit of porter-like roastiness, but it wasn’t there. Mostly just a heavy sour that wasn’t quite completely developed. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but watched a couple glasses get returned by people wanting a \"Blue Moon or something like that...\" Couldn’t help but smile...

Sample at Odd Side. Pour was a medium brown with little head and a surprising herbal/citrus hops presence in the nose. I wasn’t expecting it at all, but flavor was more in line with what I was guessing at. Lots of red wine notes with oranges and other fruit that cover up (mostly) a heavy amount of booziness. Good, but maybe a bit much.

On tap at Odd Side. Pours a nice light orange with a sudsy head and aromas of passion fruit and grapefruit. Flavor is more of the above, with a light body that balances things out very nicely. Barkeep said \"Simcoe\" was the hop and this is a darn good Simcoe IPA. It’s not very heavy and I wish I had been able to get a growler full.

On tap at Odd Side. Pours a deep brown, nice and thick with a thin creamy head and roasty, chocolatey aromas. Flavor (although I was fearing a circus peanut mess with chocolate and cream) was VERY nice. Lots of roasty malt, chocolate, a little cream and just the faintest hint of oranges, but I’m not sure I would have picked up on it if it wasn’t in the name. They added just a bit of flavor and let the Cream Stout pull the weight.

Bottle shared by Sean at 2011 Kuhnhenn Winter Solstice. Pours black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice coffee note with dark grains and vanilla as well as a hint of bourbon. Flavor has a good amount of coffee with dark grains and some backing vanilla/wood/bourbon.

Draft at Reno’s East, East Lansing. Deep not-quite-opaque garnet body, thin cream head. Minty nose. Minty, chocolaty body with woody roast. Thin, rather weak.

Tap. Clear burnt orange appearance with fluffy white head. Resiny, piney, moderately citrusy, hoppy aroma. Resiny, thick piney hoppy, citrusy, moderately malty flavor.
