Description
At Kinnegar we pair brewing tradition with a contemporary sense of adventure to produce clean, crisp, full-flavoured farmhouse beers. The brewery is named after the nearby Kinnegar Beach
just north of Rathmullan in County Donegal.

Our roots are deeply embedded in the hilly fields and farms of northeast Donegal. This is the perfect environment for the way we make beer. We don’t filter or pasteurise, and we let our industrious little friends, the yeast, carbonate the beer naturally during fermentation.

With the opening of K2, our new state-of-the-art facility in nearby Letterkenny in March 2017, the clinking of bottles coming off our line no longer mingles with the bleating of sheep from the surrounding fields. The farmhouse ethos at the core of what we do however remains the same.

Perfectly drinkable, but a bit straightforward, perhaps

Appearance- very dark, nearly black, a small mocha head, light brown tinges at the bottom. Aroma- milky coffee, chocolate, toast, caramel, fudge cake. Taste- lots of chocolate, coffee, hints of roast malt, hop traces, bit of liquorice and dark fruit in the background. Slightly fizzy mouthfeel, short finish.

Golden colour with thin head. Aroma and flavour have a fair amount of tropical fruit hop notes. Decent malty backbone too.

Bottle, takeout from BrewDog. Dark yellow or light gold, cloudy. Not much of the voluminous head promised in the description, but I can cope. Gooseberry, lemongrass, wildflower and hay in the aroma. The taste is quite bitter and more than a little bit astringent. The astringency seems to overtake in the finish, but there are white grape and floral notes in the aftertaste. A good beer: it smells great, and it has loads of character for the ABV. But a bit messy in the taste, so not perfect.

GBBF Day 1. Cask. Hazy gold beer, good pale cream colour head. Palate is light and dry, good fine carbonation. Malts are light, dry and clean and bring some sweetness. Mild orange peel, mild citrus. Light dry finish. Tidy - it’s clean but dry.

Cask at GBBF’17, day one, 08/08/17. Lightly hazed golden with a decent off white cap. Nose is mellow citric peel, melon, straw, grains. Taste comprises floral notes, melon, tangerine, toasted grains, light bread. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close. Pretty mediocre for the style.
