Visited the brewpub 1/25/2014. Dark amber color. Nose is simply caramel malts. Flavor has light biscuit, caramel malt and a very faint fruity note. Body is back by toasted grain. But let’s talk about the body, why is it so thin? I mean the flavor is here but the watery texture really detracts from it. Find a way to beef up the body because it’s possible this has something going for it. I nearly forgot to rate it. Yeah, it needs something to make it memorable.

Sample at the brewery 1/25/2014. This wins for best beer sampled on my visit. Dark mahogany color with thin lasting head. Dark roasted malts leading to chocolate, earthy malts and nuts. The flavor starts with traces of cocoa, molasses and roasted nut flavor. Has a light anise flavor toward the finish. The texture is almost syrupy sweet without being cloying. The ABV is hidden and the body is medium, leaning on the thin side. But that doesn’t hurt this brew. I was glad I saved this for last because I had nearly lost all faith in this brewpub. This is a well made brew and I could order this again.

Sample at the brewery 1/25/2014. Ruby red leaning on brown color. Nose is earthy, dirty English malts and burnt sugar. No doubt the brewer uses English malts in this beer. The Earthy malts are the main base of the flavor with light spice and also a trace of dirty dish water. I have a feeling something is unclean in this brew. I mentioned to the bartender that the tap line maybe dirty. Or maybe after all these years of drinking, I still don’t enjoy English Strong Ales. It tasted like it somebody ringed out the bar towel into my beer. Perhaps some English Ales go after this type of thing. Something is off here.

Sample at the brewery 1/25/2014. Real cloudy gold with thin head. Nose doesn’t give me much in the way of hops. Traces of flowers. The flavor is mostly malt forward. Grassy and grapefruit hops with a huge amount of pale and perhaps crystal malts. I’m sorry but I have had plenty of American Pale Ales that had a much bolder hop profile then this brew. Perhaps this was an off batch. Because this didn’t say to me it was an IPA. More like a lightly hopped Golden Ale.

Visited the brewpub 1/25/2014. Sample glass shows a translucent amber color. Nose is mostly spicy rye and pine hops. The best thing in this brew is the balance. The spicy rye malt and pine hops marry well with the level of toasted grain and biscuit malt. The rye lingers a good amount after the sip. Medium body with correct carbonation level. Decent.

Sample from cask at the brewpub. Pours a hazy straw color with a minimal white head that disappears quickly. Sparse spots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of strawberries and wheat. Light-bodied and sort of flat with flavors of strawberries, wheat and mild spice. The finish is fruity with a berry aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

Light-bodied with flavors of biscuit malt and mild grassy hops. The finish is lightly bitter with a grassy hops aftertaste. Decent overall.
