Description
The Magic Spells Brewery is an independent brewery located in the heart of East London. The brewery is owned and operated by Jas Hare and Stacey Ayeh. The brewery is committed to experimenting and developing craft beer styles, flavours and recipes whilst remaining faithful to traditional Craft beer ethos. We use traditional brewing methods and technologies and use only the finest ingredients and produce.

We started brewing some 3 years ago on a plucky ½ barrel kit in Epping in Essex, where we developed our Craft Lager and Magic Spells IPA. Originally brewing for friend’s parties, mate’s bands and of course ourselves, we learned the ropes working with an array of different people. We still have the ½ barrel kit set up at our new site in East London for experimenting but the core beers are now brewed on a 10 barrel kit, whilst we upscale to meet demand.

Bottle on the train to Norwich, 16/02/17. Pale golden with a decent off white head. Nose is biscuit, grains, light caramel, straw, pale malts, buttery notes. Taste comprises toasted grains, sweet underbelly, caramel, bready notes, light bitterness. Medium bodied, prickly carbonation, semi drying close with light hop notes. Average fayre … too sweet and lacks the refreshment of a good lager.

Bottle. After receiving my first two beers as a complimentary offering direct from the brewery, I paid money for this one!!! Blonde with a small head. Light tasting, textured with some lager malt in its taste, citrus fruits are here but are heavier in its nose.

Level 42 Bottleshare. Thanks to Leighton. Light haze on this yellowish gold beer, small white head. Light dry pale malts, some grain showing. Light honey and floralness. Modest citric peel bitterness. Mild esters. Light dry finish. A bit too skewed, needs refinement.

Bottle from courtesy of the brewery (thank you!), consumed at home whilst cooking, Tuesday 27th December 2016 Pours dark gold/light amber in colour with a white head. Soft in the mouth with a gentle hoppy buzz, it’s not mega hoppy but then I wasn’t expecting it to be a hoppy beast, it’s a good session APA though. Fruity but also with a steady maltiness, aroma is quite subtle not getting much other than quite bizarrely a wet pavement. Like it. A6 A3 T7 P3 Ov13 3.2

Bottle. Golden-amber with a bubbly-frothy head. Lightly citrus-fruity in both aroma and taste, although a little better stated in the former, with a very sessionable texture. Provides a small fizz to the palate.

Bottle. Golden-amber with a haze through a fair carbonation, that creates some activity in the palate, also with a bubbly-frothy head. Its aroma is citrus with lemon, grapefruit and a hint of pineapple, with the latter a little more prevalent in its aftertaste. Slightly dry tasting there’s a decent, light tropical fruitiness here. Its strength is not that evident.

Bottle courtesy of the brewery (thank you very much!) consumed at home Wednesday 21st December 2016 Hazy orangey gold in colour with a huge foamy white head. The aroma is a little unusual, it’s clearly fruity and perhaps leans towards tropical but with a little plasticy edge to it. Lovely hoppy burst in the mouth, a soft carbonation, pleasant bittersweet balance but with a swift dry finish. Leans more to lemony in the mouth, a little pithy edge, really decent IPA, ok so it might have a little way to go before it challenges some of the UKs best, but for a new brewery it’s a damn good start. Bottle split at L42, thanks to LKS, 14/11/16. Orange amber pour with a decent off white covering. Nose is straw, melon, light citric snap, lemon rind. Taste comprises toasted grains, mellow citric peel, straw, grass, pretty twiggy for an APA. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. A lot of tweaking to be done If this brew is to be held up against the better APA’s in London.
