Maplewood opened with the mission to push liquid boundaries in an unassuming building nestled in Chicago’s historic Logan Square neighborhood.

The first of its kind to establish brewing and distilling roots under a single roof, Maplewood has been producing finely crafted beer and spirits out of their 10BBL brewhouse and 250L Kothe hybrid still since 2014. Three years after moving into the production facility, Maplewood opened the Lounge, a neighborhood bar doubling as a cocktail parlor and brewery taproom. Beginning commercial distribution throughout Illinois shortly after settling into the Logan Square space, Maplewood has since expanded their distribution footprint into Missouri, SW Michigan, Northern Indiana, Wisconsin and Kansas. Maplewood’s patrons have come to expect expertly crafted beer in a wide range of styles.

My first in the series, intensely zesty sour vibes, a bit more Yuzu than lemon. Lemongrass and earthy oak esters keeps it in the saison realm, and while the aroma reminds me of mosquito repellent candles it’s actually quite good.

.3 litre mug at Goldfinger. The mug shows a golden beer color. A lot of lace at the sides as the foam sinks away. Clean, slightly grainy beer smell. The taste is nice, as a clean German beer. Ale yeast gives it just a bit of fruit, right the edge of my perception. Then there's a nice note of Noble hops, giving some peppery sharpness. But toasty malts stay in the forefront. I think I can finally distinguish this kölsch from a standard German lager.

The aromas are lots of pithy citrus with some crackers and biscuits. Flavors are like nose, very juicy, just right balanced sweet, carbonation and bitter. Great body and finish. Really nice beer.

Can ta home. Shared with de Joerdens. Hazy yellow color, white head. Smell and taste lightly malts, hops, sweetish fruity hoppy, light vanilla, lightly some bitterness as well though. Not too bad. Bit fizzy carbonation. Alright.

16 oz can purchased as a single at Bier Station in Kansas City, Missouri. Canned on 11/03/20 stamped on the bottom of the can. The pour is a clear straw yellow, golden with a bunch of carbonation bubbles building up a fluffy one inch white head that falls with nice lace. The aroma is fresh full grassy, soft herbal, toast cracker malt. The taste is clean grain, toasted cereal malt, with a dry floral, herbal hop and the grass to crisp finish. The palate is light to medium bodied, active carbonation and the clean crisp grassy soft mineral finish. Nicely made Pils.

Pint can from Festival Northland, 3/4/21. Hazy orange, large frothy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of grapefruit, mango, passionfruit, pale malt. Taste is grapefruit, pineapple, resin, pine. Medium bodied, mild bitterness, crisp, well balanced. Solid.

On tap at Man in the Moon. Hazy yellow with a medium white head. Soft and easy to drink with mango and some pineapple. Some bitterness in the finish.

Pint can from Festival Northland, 3/2/21. Dark brown, thin tan head. Aroma of roast, lactose, dark fruits. Taste is roast, clay, earth, dark chocolate, hints of mint. Medium bodied, chewy. Nice.

Can picked up from Beerdome, webshop, Grootegast, Netherlands and consumed at home Saturday 20th February 2021 listening to BillyNomates self titled album and about to cook Mountain Meatballs and Burgers, it's American weekend. We did a 48km cycle ride to Mainburg and back via Nandlstadt. Pours light gold actually I take that back, Loz has more left than me and it's clearly warm gold, with a slight haze, bitterness. Dry a little perfume edge, a tiny numbing on the outside edge of my tongue. A little citrus, good.
