About
The Cwrw Llŷn Brewery produced its first batch of beer in 2011. Our first brews were produced in the middle of the Llŷn countryside using restored brewing equipment in an old cow shed. Our maximum output was limited to six firkins per brew, and demand soon outstripped our ability to supply. By January 2012 we had moved to our brand-new purpose-built brewery in Nefyn, a small fishing village on the Llŷn Peninsula, North Wales. One of Britain’s oldest pilgrimage routes, it’s home to soaring mountain views, sandy beaches and hidden coves.

We’re a small independent brewery producing delicious, characterful beers. From rich malty bitters to light golden ales, we take our time over our brews. We’ll think you’ll want to too. Our beers are inspired by the people, places and things we love. Great conversation, wonderful local food, intriguing Welsh legends and the beautiful landscapes that surround us. All our beer is still hand-made in small batches, which means we can ensure its quality and consistency. We produce around 180 firkins per week. Conscious of our carbon footprint, we recycle and reuse as much of our raw materials as we can. Spent brewing grains are used to feed local pigs and our waste hops are also recycled.

500ml bottle drunk on a Lille-London bus. This was the liquid equivalent of smoking a cigar in a crowded area thanks to its strong aroma which certainly raised a few eyebrows in the seats around me. A full-tasting beer full of roasted malts, cigars, bonfire, coal and grandma’s fruitcake. Evil tasting and devilishly good.

50cl bottle from the Spar in Rhos on Sea. So, I was excited to try this after having the blonde which was very good. However, this was disappointing - yes it had a touch of the toffee and the biscuits but generally rather cardboardy and with butterscotch too. Not the worst but disappointing after the blonde - maybe it’s better on cask.

50cl bottle from the Spar in Rhos on Sea. Pours golden, nicely proportioned head and a gentle but steady bubble. The nose has honey and pale malt with a nice lemon/grapefruit note that cuts through it. The taste is more of the same and I think the citrus is confirmed to being grapefruit. The palate is great - a nice balance between malt and hops with a close to medium body and a nice long zingy (but not too zingy) finish. Overall, great session beer.

Pint at The Eagles Inn, Llanuwchllyn, Wales. A surprisingly tasty pint on a rare hot day in Wales. Got a big gulp of malt at first, levelling out to a great, balanced golden blonde character. A circle of foam followed the pint to the bottom. A nice precursor to my minted Welsh lamb burger.
