24/6/2024. Bottle bought at the Brewery. As Onyx Dragon. Pours clear mahogany brown with a small beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, dark chocolate, caramel, coffee, ashy, dark fruit notes. Moderate sweetness, moderate roasted bitterness. Good body for its 4.0%, quite smooth, average to soft carbonation. Dry roasted finish. Best of the Sandstone beers. Label now describes it as an Outstanding Black Welsh ‘Stout’. It’s pretty decent.

Cask at Crown Hotel, Nantwich. Pours almost black with a small foamy beige head and good lacing. There’s a deady roma of roast malts and lactose plus some hints of alcoholic strength. In the mouth it is sweet, creamy and velvety smooth. Cream is the main flavour with whiskey and traces of liquorice, marshmallow and (after a while) dark fruits. Finish is sweet, creamy - and somewhat boozy ! This is simply gorgeous – easily superior to any other Sandstone beer I’ve ever had. [ I had it at Crewe beer festival as well, but couldn’t rate it because I was working behind the bar ! ]

On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe. Served far too cold, so had to wait for it to warm up before I could taste or detect any aroma ! Anyways, poured almost black with no head. Eventually got some lactose and dandelion and burdock in the aroma. In the mouth the texture was rather watery. Lactose was the first flavour to appear followed by dark fruits and eventually traces of roast malts. Peanut butter can be detected buried deep in the mix – but could easily be missed. This beer is bland and nondescript.
