Keykeg Pigs Ear 2013. Black beer lasting beige head. Not keen on the aroma. Caramel toffee. Not good. Puke and diacetyl. Ugh. Drain pour.

Keg at Pigs Ear ’13, 03/13/13. Pitch black with a good sized tan head that retains well. Nose is roast malt, milk chocolate, vanilla fudge, sweet aromas. Pigs Ear. The Round Church, Hackney. Cask. Opaque dark brown - black beer. Little tan head. Palate is light and crisp. Light tangy dark malts. Whisper of coffee. Dark fruits, well buried. Finishes dry. Not bad and nice to see Fourpure produce a passable beer.

Bottle from Good Taste Croydon. It pours black with a medium light tan head. The nose is roasted malt, coffee, earth, cocoa and mild acidity. The taste is roasty, light tartness, some acidity, cardboard and coffee with a dry finish. Light body and fine, prickly carbonation. Something doesn’t seem quite right to me..... a touch of a tartness may suggest onset of infection. Also pretty thin. Not great.

Bottle from Good Taste, Crystal Palace. It pours clear amber with a thick yellow-white head head. The nose is wood, orange, tangerine, Irn Bru and candy. The taste is bitter-sweet, orange, grapefruit, a touch watery, wood, earth and pepper with a very dry finish. Light body and moderate, prickly carbonation. A bit watery perhaps, but drinkable enough.

Bottle from Good Taste, Crystal Palace. It pours clear dark amber with a thick beige head. The nose is wood, toast, earth, cardboard and sweet fruit. The taste is wood, caramel, varnish, brown bread, leaf, dried berry, astringency, some soap and dull lingering bitterness with a rather dry finish. Medium and fine, prickly carbonation. Plenty of dirty astringency going on. Soapiness ramps up as the beer warms. Doesn’t really work for me. A bit of a disappointment...

Hazy amber beer, no real head. Palate has a modicum of crispness and is semi dry. Thin dry caramel sweet malt. Slight pukey notes in the mid. A little citric hop, not enough to balance the malty sweetness or hide the puke. Light dry finish. Not good. I hope this new brewery can find their feet and improve.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at Kris Wines. Pours rich brown with frothy beige head that settles into a creamy film. The aroma has moderate roasted malts with hints of tobacco and baking cocoa. Light to medium sweet flavor with a strong roasted malt foundation, with soft notes of coffee, cocoa, dirt and burnt leaves. Light to medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Good balance to finish, further roasted malts, a bit of toasted sugars, light chocolate cake, burnt bread, raisins and a mild earthy bitterness. A solid offering.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at Kris Wines. Pours clear, dark amber with a large, lasting frothy light tan cap; the beer couldn’t really look any better. The aroma holds toasted malts, touches of dried berries, brown bread. Light to medium sweet flavor with a balanced, lightly toasted brown bread character, hints of toffee, semi-dark dried fruits, offsetting bitterness of earth and subtle pine. Light bodied with average, massaging carbonation. Some dirty hops in the finish, dirt and pine, more dry, lightly toasted brown bread, dried cranberries, grape skins. In terms of the appearance and the mouthfeel this is a pretty stellar beer. The bitterness is a touch overly pronounced at times; a bit more sweetness would balance that out. Good opening effort from this new brewery.

Cock Tavern. Hazy dark red-amber beer with a tidy pale cream coloured head. Smooth palate with light fine carbonation. Sweet creamy malts. Sweet fruits. Lactose. Apples. Finishes sweet with a touch of grain. Messy, over sweet and a bit green. Hate to give a new brewer an average mark but this really needs some tweaking.
