I'm not sure if I'm early or late for this Christmas special, full of sweet mint that you get in an ice cream, in both aroma and taste? It's easy enough, perhaps not quite the depth you might expect from a winter seasonal, but rich enough. Happy Christmas then...

Cask at Pied Bull, Chester. Knew I’d drunk this before but didn’t realise I hadn’t rated it – until I check Brewver. Anyway, pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small foamy tan head and good lacing. The aroma has mint, sugar and chocolate malts. In the mouth it is quite sweet and somewhat smooth with a creamy texture. Mint is the first flavour to hit the taste buds – though in a limited way. Afterwards come stronger flavours of roast malts and milk chocolate. Sweetness lasts into the finish. This is decent – and quite unusual.

Cask at Pied Bull, Chester. Pours a cloudy golden orange with minimal foamy almost white head and good lacing. There’s tropical fruits and tangerine in the aroma. In the mouth it is briefly sweet before becoming quite bitter with a creamy texture. Oranges and floral hops in the flavour, plus citrus, lemon and marmalade coming through later. Finish is quite dry. This is reasonable if a little strange.

Cask at Pied Bull, Chester. Pours golden yellow with a small off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly generic citrus with hints of lemon and grapefruit. In the mouth it starts off slightly bitter, but this bitterness gradually increases. Flavour has floral hops and citrus plus traces of bread rolls and grains. A little spiciness comes through later leading to a slightly dry finish. This is OK, but somewhat nondescript.

Cask at Pied Bull, Chester. Pours almost black with a small frothy cream head. There’s roasted malts and chocolate in the aroma. In the mouth it is slightly sweet with some hints of floral hops but the main sensations are burning alcoholic strength and liquorice. Later here are traces of hops, wine gum and chocolate. Finish is slightly dry and distinctly boozy. This is reasonable but somewhat on the rough and ready side.

Cask at Pied Bull, Chester. Pours a slightly hazy chrome yellow with a small foamy almost white head and good lacing. The aroma has floral hops and some hints of citrus. In the mouth it is tangy but with some underlying sweetness. Floral hops are the mainstay of the flavour, with hints of pien, citrus, lemon rind and orange peel. Finish is quite dry and bitter. This is decent – plenty of flavour for the strength.

Cask at Pied Bull, Chester. Pours a golden yellow with a medium sized foamy off-white head. There’s sweet malts in the aroma – but not much else. Sweet malts again in the mouth, this time with some underlying bitterness. Quite watery overall. Favour has oranges plus hints of citrus, lime and grapefruit. Some sweetness remains in the finish. This is reasonable if somewhat bland.
