Description
Sudwerk Brewing Co. was founded in 1989 by two German descendants determined to share the high-quality, familiar taste of true German lagers. Since then, we have been relentlessly pushing the boundaries of traditional lager making for 30 years; pioneering the craft beer industry along the way.
We choose to brew lagers not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because the end result will serve to refresh and bring the best of our energies and skill, because the challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to drink, with others too.
Our beer making processes are rooted in traditional German brewing methods but blended with modern, West-Coast craft beer practices. We are not afraid of the time consuming and difficult nature of lagers but instead find it to be an exhilarating challenge. We showcase clean, crisp yeast character, powerful flavor-packed hop bombs, and beautiful malt backbones; all on a lager frame. This is not the dull can of lager beer you think you know.

Draft at the brewpub. Very dark brown color with a decent beige head. Aroma is caramel malt with some hop. Near medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is lightly fruity, citrusy floral hop, followed by nutty, roasted dark caramel. The finish resembles a dry stout - but roasted rather than burntly toasted. Very smooth for a brown ale. A truly good drink. May be some differences in batches, or mayhap it improves with a little settling. I didn’t get anything very harsh. Much less harsh than many brown ales.

Draft at the brewpub. Aroma of caramel malt and something spicey. Nice amber color with a very decent white head. Thin to medium body with mild carbonation. Flavor? It’s got ginger. Zingy! Completely hides the noble hop (got a sample of the Helles, which the barstaffer said was the same recipe, except for the ginger and that had hop). Seems the ginger darkens the color a bit, and it certainly adds Zing! The finish is pretty dry, and the ginger hangs on. Maybe a little hop finally is detectable. Great refresher.

Light banana aroma. How hefe. Cloudy gold color with a white head that does a bit of lacing. Starts with banana and yeast, and wheat. Medium bodied, tends to thin as the carbonation effervesces, but it becomes creamy. There is clove development, but not overly much. The ale develops a bitter quality, that battles with the yeast and banana. It’s really very good.

Aroma of malt, maybe backed by hop; alcohol seems present. Orangy gold color (not my idea of copper) with a white head that leaves. Medium mouthfeel. Definite start of sweet malt, and it is malt with character. Moves on with a bit of spice, leaves the mouth a bit atingle. The malt tends to stay on into the finish, and there is not really enough hop to balance this. Pretty good. One of the better lagers I’ve had in some time.

Bottle from aspidites; Thanks Mike! Nose of caramel, a little chocolate, and roastiness; clear brown with a medium tan head; medium body, thick with flavors: chocolate; molasses; caramel, and a little friutiness thrown in. Good complexity. Finishes with a little hops!

Thanks to droopy49 for this one! Starts out with a large, long lasting tan head over a clear, ruby tinted brown body. In the aroma is a mix of light breadiness with toasted malt and caramel. Moderately sweet with a subtle hop bitterness. Nice long smooth finish. Creamy and soft on the palate.

Bottle pours a light golden with a large white head that had amazing lasting power. Spotty lacing. Light malts that are a bit paler than I expectedfrom a Bock. Flavor was light and a bit sweet, lacking some of the darker notes I expected. Body was medium, softly carbonated and a pleasant finish.

Slighty hazy gold with a small white head, i didn’t swirl the bottle. Grainy wheaty, yeasty aroma with only a tiny hint of banana; Malty, banana, flavor, but not the best hefe, flavor better than the aroma.

Thanks to droopy49 for sending this one! Large, long lasting, off white head over a medium gold colored body. Good malt aroma with some spicy honey notes. Smooth, malty and well balanced as it should be. Nice beer!
