Description
Brewer of real ales, with over 150 pubs across the South of England. The original Northgate Brewery had been in existence since at least 1837. Henry Wadworth bought the company in 1875, moving to the present purpose built Northgate Brewery building in 1885. John Smith Bartholomew, Wadworth's son-in-law, became a partner in 1887, and it has been owned by the Bartholomew family ever since. In 2016 Wadworth brewery completed an ambitious 4 years investment plan to move all aspects of the brewery onto one location.

Spoons Fest! Clear but very dark brown beer. Big off white head. Touch of bramble and blackcurrant on the nose. Light dry palate. low carbonation. Tart but light blackcurrant over a dry dark malt base. Nice combination but severely let down but some very unwelcome sulphur. Not enough to ruin it completely but just really annoying. Finishes very dry. This would have been a 3.6 without the sulphur, hope I can try a better kept version.
Update - tried twice more in 2 different pubs. Same sulphur - bah!

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial rooms, Bristol 26/10/10. Near black with a tight tan head. Light aroma of tart blackcurrants, with some dark chocolate and roasted malts. Flavour was similar with a short bitter finish. Very easy drinking for 6% ABV and no sign of the Wadworth house character, which is a good thing.

50cl Bottle. Pours amber with a small creamy white head. Nose is very malty. Toffee and caramel. Medium bodied. Flavor adds a bit of grain and perfume. Dry end. Needs some vinousness to become a really good old ale.

Bottle. A clear, amber beer with a small, beige head. Bready, toffee nose with dried fruits, some fresh fruits. Some spiced, peppery notes. Coriander seeds? Medium body, a bit flat and dead. Slightly bready flavor, toffee and a buttery touch. A spiced bitterness chimes in towards the end, but it canโt prevent it from being a bit dull and uninteresting. Drinks easily. 101008

Bottle. It pours a clear, dark golden body and a decent off-white head. Itโs malty and slightly biscuity, toffee borderlining butterscotch, and with some fruity hops, but just a subtle dash. Very soft on the palate, feeling almost dead even though itโs nicely carbonated, medium to full bodied, and with a balancing bitterness showing up towards the medium lenght end. Toffeeish flavor with fruityness. A decent beer indeed, it drinks easily, but is too boring to be interesting. 101008

50cl bottle from M&S Camberley. Pours copper coloured with an off-white head; aroma of cane sugar and perhaps a touch of rum; rich, raw, sugary taste, almost bitter with molasses; and a heavy malty finish. This doesnโt really work for me.

@ Hare & Hounds, Devizes. Dark brown with a thin head. Husky, malty (grassy) character. Slight acidity comes in late but balances out the good, grainy character.
