Martin House getting to be one of my favorite breweries, they do so many styles and generally do them well. Tonight I have Battle Snakes, don’t know the story, really not concerned. But I will say that the graphics on the label are pretty damn good. Pint can, tipping into my Cowtown (Fort Worth too) snifter. I see a murky, gold-orange liquid completed by a strong but dwindling off-white head of foam. The scent pulls me in, tropical fruit and light pine. And the drink may not be great but it is fine for the style. Pineapple, grapefruit, grass, crackers and a bit of hoppy bitterness. The 10% slips through unnoticed but appreciated. Nice.

Another of Martin House’s double-12 oz cans offerings. The label promises great things, time to find out. I lift the tab and make the pour into my Great Heights tulip glass. One shade short of totally black with an active recharging of the skim of taupe foam. The scent is a delight, truly smells like a thin mint cookie. The taste is good, just not to the level of the smell. Chocolate, mint, medicine and toast. An adventure but one I’d likely not take again.

Can from Tavour. Pours a la Guinness. Dark brn/blk huge tan pour that changes as it goes down. Aroma is treacle, whiskey, roast/burnt malt. Full bodied. Flavor is heat, treacle, chocolate, roast/burnt and bourbon. Slight oak astringency. This is complicated stuff. Good.

Can. A- Sour, acidic. A- Golden orange color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Sour, tart, salty, raspberry. P- Light body, average texture, medium carbonation, tart finish. O- Almost warhead like sourness. A bright acidic finish that is almost too tart. Raspberry is there but not enough sweetness to help balance out the sourness. Just too sour.

12 oz. can from HEB, Boerne, TX. Pours a hazy orange-bronze color with a beige head and very good retention. Great lacing. Dominant peanut butter aroma. Good peanut butter flavor too, with some vanilla notes in the finish. Not quite as artificial as some others. But these golden stouts don't have the same roasted flavor as regular stouts. This one is sweet, with a slick mouthfeel. Low carbonation and no bitterness. The 8.0% ABV is well hidden, but warming. A decent dessert beer, but too sweet for repeated consumption.

12oz can from Tavour. Lot going on here - I expected it to be sweet, which is usually a turnoff for me on Imperial Stouts. Was unique in flavor, but hard to have more than half a beer of.

A barrel aged imperial stout from Martin House. All positives so far. I am taking a cooled 12 oz can out of the two-pack and tilting into my Cowtown tulip glass. A totally black liquid with a frothy top of dark tan foam. The nose is top level for the style, dark chocolate, grain and booze. And the drink improves on that. Baking chocolate, whole grain bread, a whiskey taste and burn, oak, a bit of caramel and just a hint of berries. Another fine imperial stout from Martin House, how many have I tried now?

Uh, yeah, reaching out there for a beer name. But Martin House does well by their dark, heavy beers. My Delirium snifter to catch the liquid from the 12 oz can, more black than brown with a feathery head of tan foam. The smell is a cake or a pastry or something like that. The taste is as put out there on the label, graham crackers, vanilla, chocolate, candy and dessert. A sipper to be lingered over.

I previously have had Martin House's Columbiana and found that to be a very good brew. Can this one be similar? A tulip glass catches the pour from the 12 oz can, jet black as expected followed by a mahogany brown cover of foam. The nose is an attractive combo of chocolate and coconut. And a full drink only builds on that. I think the coconut stands out with dark chocolate right behind and whole grain bread, a honey sweetness or maybe it's caramel, doesn't matter, malt and almond. The alcohol has no chance of showing through this collection of flavors, let's see if I can still say this after I finish the can. A heavy density to the beer that I like in imperial stouts. The brewer continues to do it right with beers like this.
