Handpull cask at the Cellar, Chester. Light gold, mostly clear with a smattering of white head. Getting notes of lemon zest and berry, fresh grass on the nose. Taste is nicely balanced from the outset, although the finish turns very bitter. Its has a few twists and turns without losing character and maintaining focus. Light, creamy body, very little carbonation. Well done.

Draught keg at That Beer Place, Chester. Magenta or maybe a shade lighter, a little translucent with a ring of pink head. Big Vimto hit: lots of blackcurrant, red grape, a little raspberry on the nose. The similarity to a soft drink ends when I taste it, it's got a pleasing sourness with big berry flavour. Short finish. Light to medium body, not that much carbonation to cling to. Impressive recipe.

Keg draught at the Sandstone, Chester. Brownish red, translucent with a spotty buff-coloured head. Light malty aroma, not much to it but that's in keeping with the style. Delicious chewy malt in the taste, little touches of berry. Fades to a gentle astringent. Light body with carbonation ramped up. What it's supposed to be.

Yes, it's far out. There are so many good pubs within a few minutes' walk of each other, you could be forgiven for giving the Sandstone a miss, or even being unaware of its existence. However, I'd recommend a stop if you have the time. It has a converted shop micropub feel in what we'd call a strip mall in the US deep in a residential area. Three cask and 10 keg (not all utmost tickable craft) and two big fridges full of packaged beers to drink in (slightly larger fee) or take away.Northern Monk, Polly's, Budvar, Salopian, RedWillow, Deya. Prices are fair.

538ml can at the Square Bottle (JDW), Chester. Mid-brown, hint of mahogany, some translucency with a small (for a Guinness anyway) beige/khaki head. Malty aroma, dusting of chocolate, a little coffee. Sweet taste. Too sweet, you can taste all the sugar in there that didn't get got. Still, similar enough to alcoholic Guinness. Light watery body. OK, good for 0.0%.

Keg draught at the brewery tap. Light gold, a tiny bit of haze, a thin layer of white head. Light fruity aroma, a bit grassy, lemon meringue. Fresh sweet taste, more lemon, some sweet spice. This is hard for me to get a handle on but I really like it. The finish is bitter, with medium hody and carbonation on the heavy side. Good.
