Handpull cask at the Real Ale Classroom, Leicester City Centre. Light to mid-gold and hazy with a swirl of slightly off-white head. Aroma on this one is a little quiet - I'm getting a nice jumble of soft citrus and tropical fruits. Oranges, pineapple to the fore. Nicely balanced taste, some bittersweetness, good malt in the background, more orange and pineapple up front. Soft body with little carbonation and a thicker texture than I'd imagined. Another good one from Pentrich.

As basic and bare bones as you get bit certainly none the worse for it. It's the most popular place I'd been to, and I had to venture outside to sit. They have eight cask beers on, mostly sessionable strength and traditional UK styles from micros to smaller nationals. A couple of Idle Valley beers. You will likely find ticks. Cheap as you're likely to find in 2026.

It's a former cafe and it's got that cafe feel. Spacious, modern and oh so comfortable, Retford Craft House offers 4 cask, 14 keg and a bit fridge of UK craft goodies. I come inland everyone is glued to the Soap Box There's mostly the great and thegood - lots of Vault City and Cloudwater - but some slightly less-seen breweries (at least around here) like Newbarns. Prices are fair considering what you're getting. Amazing.

OK, maybe this isn't a ticking pub,but it's decent.on CAMRA's National Inventory, it's just a nice old fashioned pub. Separate lounge and public entrances, but it is small and open plan so you wind up in the same place more or less. Glorious tartan-y carpet. Five cask beers on, a couple of them possibly tickable (a Woodforde's stout and a Five Points pale). Friendly punters and landlady. Danceable 80s pop (Duran Duran, Whitney) piped in. Retford is small and this is right in town, so maybe worth popping in.

Handpull cask at Brew Tavern, Nottingham. Light to mid hazy gold with a swirl of off-white head. Fruity aroma, pink grapefruit, some pineapple and maybe orange peel. Taste is that perfectly judged tinge-of-vanilla and slightly yeasty sweetness that has a little bit of tangy hoppy bitterness. Body is light with very little carbonation. Hands up, I haven’t a Scooby what the beer is that they are honouring here. But overall it’s fantastic stuff.

Walking in, the Brew Shed has a fresh feel to it.another micropub-feel place but it is larger than it looks on the outset. The wooden flooring and furniture almost have an Old West feel but this is a truly British establishment. It is the brewpub for Harrison's Brewery, which is just out back. The beers are traditional, but the bitter I had was of a very high quality. They also carried cask and keg feomwell-known breweries such as Wilde Child, Yonder, Two by Two and Nothing Bound. I would have loved to have stayed bit the train beckoned so only had a quick half.make sure you make time to try a few if you find yourself here.
