Neat little pub south of the city centre (past the Malt Shovel, keep going south). I visited during the holiday season and was greeted by Santa Claus himself! So, frequented by celebrities. Open plan but has a two-bar feel. The front feels like a cafe with a massive bookshelf for a wall, while you can dine anywhere, the back bit feels a bit more eat-y. Menu looks good, basic burgers and whatnot with a few surprises. Four sessionable cask beers on the bar, including a milk stout and a red. All local I thin’ and three new to me. You won’t get dozens of ticks but certainly worth popping in if you’re down this way.

Handpull cask at the Pomfret Arms, Northampton. Lightish red and clear with a sizeable beige head. Light malty aroma with orange peel. Bittersweet taste, not quite astringent but the bitterness certainly shapes the flavour to the drying finish. Light body, soft carbonation. As simple as you like, but really decent.

Cask-oriented micropub on a side street in the centre of Daventry. It is fairly small, with one room smartly decked out with slightly dim lighting. Enthusiastic service and punters! The six gravity cask beers are mostly from local Potbelly and not-so-local (but no less welcome) Frome. Keg from ABK and UnBarred. It is a decent place, well worth a visit, but you may not get so many ticks if you live locally, and the beer choice is reasonable 'safe'. Spotless loo is a plus.

Draught keg at the Goat, Long Buckby. Light gold and hazy with a nicely composed dome of white head. Aroma of pie crust, light notes of lemon, boiled sweet. It's a bit muted. The sweet, biscuity malty taste is much improved, with light fruityhops lingering around the finish. Decent body with heavy carbonation. A lovely DEYA beer. Had a lot of those this year.

Gravity cask at the Ale Pole, Daventry. Dark, almost greenish gold, hazy with the tiniest smattering of off-white head. Grapefruit aroma, some of the Sabro herbal grassiness. Sweet taste with notes of Sabroesque dill banging against the citrus-Ness of the Citra. Its a combination that's made to work, and TBM are at their best here. Light body, softer carbonation. Yes please.

Handpull cask at the Goat, Long Buckby. Golden brownand a bit hazy with a large off-white head. Light toasty aroma, leafy hops, dried grass, caramel, sourdough the aroma. Sweet and doughy taste tempered with light hop nearer the lfinish. Medium body, weighty on the tongue, with soft carbonation. Nice.
