Olut Profile - Brewver

Drinking this one on Sandanista Day, celebrating the 1979 Revolution in Nicaragua, today led by double term serving president Daniel Ortega. This Double IPA is kind of a celebration as it's actually a pretty good supermarket exclusive... bucking the trend! I've just had a DIPA previously and this is much better with its sweetish tropical fruitiness more dominant than its strength in taste - a little more levelled up in aroma but always flavoursome.

Afterglow from Vocation Brewery

Afterglow is the name of an Oscar nominated Nick Nolte Rom-com towards the end of last century - it didn't win. Fine, but probably no awards for this strength-driven IPA, which does impact on its hoppy tropical-fruitiness to an extent. Hazy with sweetened flavours.

Pilsner from Saltaire Brewery

Deadication beer to Czech composer Julius Fucik, who was born on this day and his compositions are still played as patriotic music in Czechia. The composition of this pilsner is pretty good in terms of style, it has a very 'Czech' taste and is easy in the palate, however as a brew it's pretty bland. Golden-blonde colour.

Dunell's Beaumont

On the main seafront road west of the capital in Beaumont, it backs onto the promenade at this point and is accessed on this side beyond its car park. Wine and spirits dominate in a made cosy warehouse setting and the displays are well designed and organised. One alcove is given over to beers and ciders and all arranged by styles on shelves. This place represents the best selection of beers on the island that I found, and as it's a small island I can't imagine I missed anywhere with a larger one. Local beers are available but like most places in Jersey there's nothing extensive, but there's lots of craft cans from the UK, Europe and North America. They had just less than a 100 options on my visit, although the website has probably double this many listed. The only thing that put me off buying many was the very inflated prices on most items.

I'm drinking this one on 'Nelson Mandela Day' - I was once told by a bus driver whilst touring South Africa that the large house we were passing was his home. I have no idea if he was telling the truth or not! I am sure this has plenty of passion fruit in both aroma and taste, and at slightly overbearing levels. I wouldn't want more than a can of this at a time! Sweetish with a carbonation also affecting its taste.

Fell Runner from Bowness Bay Brewing Co

Deadication beer to Australian Rugby League player Ian Moir - he would have felled a few runners in his time, was born on this day in 1932. Traditional blonde ale in colour and flavour with a traditional bottle-conditioned texture and taste. Nice hoppy character without being anything exemplary.

Odd numbered years used to mean a summer off watching football - not anymore. Not sure if that's a celebration or complaint... but I'm watching! No complaints with this very sweet-fruity IPA. Hazy and citrus based tropical notes in both aroma and taste, without much bitterness. Good body but not heavy. Excellent art-work on the can, which is what this beer celebrates.
