Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Glowing deep copper with an off-white head. Strong raspberry flavour with toffee behind. Sweet up front with a mild, slightly minerally bitterness in the finish. After a promising start it finished being rather average and maybe a tad too sweet.

Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Crystal clear deep gold with an off-white head and a light fizz. Superb condition. Caramel, lemon, sticky mango, a touch of dust and a light leafy hop note. Opal Fruit sweets. Sweetish, but I quite like that. Decent brew to start the fest.

Bottle from Sunbird Deli, Brighton. This café does very nice and surprisingly cheap meze boards, which we thoroughly enjoyed sitting outside in gloriously warm sunshine on the last day of what has been a very wet winter. I'd thoroughly recommend coming here for the food. By contrast, I wouldn't recommend this drink (other than as my first UAE rate). It's golden-amber with a wisp of a white crest and a light fizz. It smells and tastes of artificial pineapple flavour - like those old pineapple cubes sweets - with sugary, sticky malt behind. Too sweet and too fake for me.

Can from Asda, High Wycombe. Black with a hint of mahogany; there's no head. A little bit viscous on pouring. Odd smell; reminded me of shellfish, oysters, something like that. The harbour theme continues into the taste, with salt to the fore. The advertised caramel and chocolate are definitely there; more in the background than I expected, but enough to prevent a nice balance and contrast to the savoury tones of the brew. Umami flavours come through in the finish; a bit of Bovril maybe? A light roasty bitterness too. After the seafood shock of the aroma, this became very enjoyable. Not the sugar bomb I expected, but complex and yet very drinkable. Impressive for a supermarket brew.

Can from the friendly brewer's own stall at Farnham Farmers' Market. Labelled as a California common, and from what the brewer said had definitely been brewed as that style. Clear amber to copper with a middling fizz and a negligible head. Quite nice at first. Fruity up front - orange and ripe apple initially, with toasty bready malt behind. After drinking more it got worse though - wort-y, green apple and a little raw alcohol. Felt a bit homebrew-y. Yeah, it's not great.

Can from Tesco, Reading. Deep yellowy-gold with a white head. Syrupy, resinous and quite bitter. Melon, pink grapefruit and a little unripe mango. It's ok, but I felt the bitterness needed toning down a tad to allow the flavours to shine through.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Mahogany coloured with a thin beige head and a light carbonation. Superb condition again - whoever's in charge of the cellar at this Spoon's deserves a bonus. Smokey up front (I like that!) then stewed plums and a touch of cough mixture (I like this less). Kind of a peaty thing going on here. Unfortunately the flavours die a little and it becomes a tad watery in the drying, mildly bitter finish that leaves a hint of smoked marmalade. Starts out well, ends just ok. An odd one this; on balance there were more positives than negatives though.
