Dick Cantwell has travelled to Thwaites Brewery, in Lancashire, hosting its first international brewer for us, to brew this beer especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. This golden-copper, medium-bodied beer has a floral nose and a balanced character, allowing the subtle flavour of jasmine to prevail among its impressive hop flavours. Medallist at the Great American Ale Festival 2013.

Cask at the Tyburn, JDW - London. Pours perfectly clear, rich gold with a lasting, white foam head. Bready malt aroma with a bit of toffee. Medium sweet flavor with more hefty bready malts, buttery toffee, hints of herbs. Medium bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Sweet finish with mild warmth, bread, toffee, restrained floral bitterness, some tropical fruits and bubblegum. Novel.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Golden amber with a creamy head; floral aroma; soft, sweet, floral taste - I don’t know what Jasmine tastes like, but I guess this is it! - the finish is dry and hoppy without being overpowering, gentle and well-balanced with well hidden alcohol.

Bright copper with a very small head. It’s not overpowering for its strength but not flavoursome either. Floral nose.

Cask at Isaac Wilson JDW Middlesbrough. Copper-brown amber colour, foam off-white head leaving some lacing and aroma of light caramel, floral notes. Taste is caramel with floral jasmine, boiled sweets, and a lingering hop bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft to medium carbonation, dry bitter finish. Quite OK.

Half-pint, hand-pulled at the Telford Town Centre Wetherspoon’s on 16th Oct 2013. Poured a murky amber with a good white head that produced some impressive lacing. The nose is a mixed bag of aromas: woody, earthy, floral hops and yet also semi-sweet caramel hints in there too. The taste does have jasmine notes to add with the smells and the beer is a complex if somewhat confusing and dare I say boring blend of flavours. The alcohol is well hidden, but overall I didn’t take to this and was glad I only chose to have half a pint.

Cask at the Masque Haunt. It pours clear amber with a minimal white head. The nose is wood, earth, sweaty, dank hops, golden syrup, caramel and some floral notes. The taste is very jasmine-forward, caramel, wood, earth, some astringency, soap citrus and alcohol with a dry, floral finish. Medium body, low carbonation and syrupy mouth-feel. A bit dull and syrupy unfortunately.

Cask handpull at Montagu Pyke London. Not great. No condition. Slightly syrupy malt. Jasmine flavour is there. I need to have this in better nick but having been to Elysian in Seattle I was really looking forward to this and Thwaites have been doing some good beers lately but this is well ordinary at best. 2.8 re rate County Hotel Ashford. Better condition but still quite syrupy on the alcohol. Yep ok. Better.
