Cask at the Wenlock Arms, London on 17th November 2013. Deep ruby-to-black with tan decaying foam and scant lacing. Chocolate, nuttiness and roastiness in aroma. Bitter chocolate in-mouth with plenty of roast coffee notes. Intensely bitter chocolate finish. Light mouthfeel and medium body. Delicious.

(Cask at Wenlock Arms, Old Street, London, 22 Nov 2013) Black colour with foamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with chocolate, coffee and dark bread. Malty, roasted taste with notes of coffee, dark chocolate, dark bread and a generous roasty bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a slight sweetness. Well made and tasty stout. Nice one.

Hand-pulled pint in The Four Candles, a Wetherspoon pub in Oxford on 22nd Nov 13. Poured a rudy black with a full tan covering. Both the nose and taste were of dark, bitter chocolate and over roasted ground coffee, not a lot of sweetness from the malts (or hops for that matter). Medium bodied, would have liked more depth, but overall not bad at all. Should have had a half-pint to be honest, as the evening was only beginning and there were many more beers to come before bed-time.

Cask handpull at The Tyburn Spoons Marble Arch. First one out of the pipes so although others say this is sweet I had a touch of sourness to go with the lactose. Some sweetness on the chocolate flavour. Badly served.

Cask at the Monkโ€™s Retreat, Reading. Ruby-black with a loose beige head. Plums and blackcurrant compete with soot amongst a creany texture. A little black coffee in the finish, but overall a pleasant and surprisingly fruity stout.
