A superbly balanced beer golden in appearance with peaty smoky aromas and smooth whisky flavours from peated malt. With a measure of English Whisky from St. George’s Distillery in Norfolk, it is rich in flavour and a superb after dinner drink.

Bottle. Pours nice clear amber, with an airy head. Nice aroma of caramel malt, toffee, peat and oak barrels. Full body with soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet with burned malt and whisky notes, as well as some butter scotch and notes of diacetyl with a smokey finish.

Bottle from Woodbridge Wine Company. Pours and mid orange yellow colour, minimal head, soon disappearing. Too strong for my liking on the smoke/peat and the whiskey aspect didn’t work for me.

Clear gold beer, thin white head. Crispy light palate. Smoky whisky! Big time! Totally dominates. A little pale malt and minerals. Crisp finish. Way too much peat!

(Bottle, Jerusalem Tavern, Farringdon, London, 20 Nov 2012) Amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with smoke, apricots, citric hops and a touch of peat. Smoky, fruity taste with notes of apricots, orange peel and smoke. A certain bitterness shines through in the finish. Medium body, with some sweetness. Different, and quite decent.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dagan’s place. Thanks beerandbeyond. BBD 9/12. Slightly hazy golden. Aroma of smoked whiskey, burny rubber, a bit of honey and a tiny bit of alcohol. Smoky flavor of whiskey, malt, a light fruity note and a bitter finish. Medium-bodied. 6/3/7/3/13=3.2

Bottle: Poured a light clear copper color ale with a large foamy head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of dry malty notes and powerful peat notes is quite something. Taste is overpowered by peat malt notes with some dry caramel malt also discernable. Body is pretty light with good carbonation. I love peat malt but this is quite overpowering and there would be advantage to have a bit of residual sugar to balance out the peat. Interesting experiment but not something I would seek again.

Definitely smell the peated malt in this - more than anything. A powerful aroma that stays with you all the way through the beer and makes hell of any other aromas or tastes. At the same time, it also tastes too much like peat moss and it’s not something I generally like to eat. Pours light orange with decent head and lacing. Not sure where the whiskey comes into this. Their regular flask-looking glass bottle, in a darker green, from the LCBO. Pours a golden-amber colour with a foamy head, average retention and soapy lace. Big peaty nose found in whiskeys, with caramel and burnt wood. Medium-thin mouthfeel, sometimes more wet than others. The taste is a nice blend of lots going on. Some fruitiness (oranges), some grain malt, some whiskey peat, smoke, and some bitterness from the hop. A pretty interesting beer for fans of whiskeys only.

0.5l bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. This one pours a light blurry honey-golden body with a small light bubbly and sidesticking white head. Smells definitely smoky, with peat and sweet ham. Wet gunpowder moshed between two rocks and added black leather. A strange description, but yeah. It has a really thin and light mouthfeel with a soft to average carbonation level. Peated smoky flavors. It really lack some mouthfeel this one. There is also a faint fruity hint hidden behind all that peated woody smoke, but more subtle. Subtle peaches actually. Ends more watery and quite blend. Peat all the way, but I wish it had a bit more body to follow up all that smoke. 24.09.2012
