Penn Quarter Porter was our first in a line of draft and 22oz bomber limited-release beers, and it’s a robust porter! In the way that The Public™ is on the line between a pale ale and an IPA, this warming brew tiptoes the line between a porter and a stout – perfect for the cooler months in DC, but at a crushable 5.5% this porter is great all year round.

Can from Home Bargains, Bridge of Don. It pours darkest brown to black with a sturdy tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, dark charr, coffee grounds, chocolate, gateaux, mocha, toasted spice and toasted fruit cake. The taste is quite smooth upfront, robust, rich roasted malt, bitter - sweet character, dark roasted coffee, faint hint of acidity, coffee cake, umami, cacao nibs, dark chocolate, nuttiness, praline and dull alcohol presence with a roasty, mocha finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Robust, flavourful and yet drinkable. Solid porter.

Can from Home Bargains, Byfleet. Aroma has tart berries and espresso. Darkest. Cola brown. Foamy beige head. Flava matches the aroma. Coldbrew coffee with tart berries. An underlying creaminess. Some sweet berries in the underbelly. Medium bodied. Slick to creamy. Flat-fizzy carbonation. Long dry finish. Good stuff.

[12oz can from Home Bargains, Bracknell.] A glossy peat brown coloured pour with a rim of beige froth; aroma of coffee and maple syrup; rather sweet in the mouth with a fruity coffee taste; and a drier finish. A pleasant porter.

Can from Home Bargains, Reading. Dark brown with a barely-there beige head. Chocolate and roasted malt. Smooth. A hint of blackcurrant and a light earthiness. Pleasant, if a little simple.

(Can) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of black bread, tobacco, coffee, black pepper, prunes, chocolate and sweet liquorice. Malty, roasted taste with coffee, tobacco, black rye bread, prunes, chocolate, roasted nuts, black pepper, a touch of orange and a generous roasty bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, mainly dry. Rich, tasty and well made porter. Very nice.

I am having a mini-tasting with myself today, 17th March 2023. The wife is out with old school friends, so Bertie and I are home alone until they all turn up later to use our bar. Beer number 4 and it's nearly 16:00, they will be here soon! 355ml can from a local Home Bargains store: BB 28th October 2023. Poured into a lovely Gordon's thistle shaped glass, all dark beers look great in this glass. Black bodied, tanned topping. Malty nose and taste, toasted/roasted maltiness with a dry front, middle and back. Some dark chocolate flavours in the mix and maybe a coffee like hint or two also.

355ml can from Home Bargains, Shrewsbury. Deep brown appearance, good off-white head. Very light chocolate malt aroma. Taste is fairly mild I suppose, a serviceable sipper with mild cocoa and moderate brown ale malt.. fine overall.

Can from Home Bargains, Salford. Extremely dark brown with a thinnish head. Dark malt beer but perhaps not a typical porter, and not the most flavoursome, although it's crisp and fine enough to sup with a sweetness to proceedings.

Can from Home Bargains, High Wycombe, Bucks. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a healthy beige head on top. Roasty, malty, coffee, chocolate taste and aroma. Pleasant enough porter.
