Kind of roasty, some dark fruitiness, light chocolate, both sweet and dark. Some oxidation in not the greatest way. A cellar hit; better fre

From the September 2013 3R6P tasting. The 2011 edition +++ Sampled from a large brown bottle this beer poured thick and black with a small soapy brown head that faded quickly and left only a hint of lacing. The aroma was sweet molasses, anise, vanilla, port wine and a hint of coconut. The flavor was toasty malts, coconut, vanilla, chocolate syrup, faint port wine and anise. Long finish of anise, vanilla, chocolate and coconut.. Full, thick and smooth body. Excellent.

Bottle @Bruce’s. It pours near black with a thick dark tan head. The nose is roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, light spice, caramel, toffee and fudge. The taste is roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, decent bitterness, wood, some alcohol and scorched earth with a dry, roasty finish. Medium-full body and moderate carbonation. No real depth of flavour, but smooth and pretty tasty.

On tap. Midnight black, big creamy coffee colored head. Smells like chocolate and roasted cedar. Taste is very filling, nice big body, moderate bitterness and big chocolate presence. Finish is oaky and smooth.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s, London. Pours clear, black-brown with a small, beige cream head. Nose holds some alcohol, dark malts, faint chocolate. Medium to big sweet flavor, some dark malts, bit of rubbing alcohol, light earthy bitterness, burnt bread, some bittersweet cocoa. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish, some burnt malts, dirt, bittersweet cocoa, earthy bitterness. Decent.

2011 Vintage. Aroma is a balanced blend of roasted malts and dark fruit. You get a decent amount of chocolate and a light coffee note. There is a lot of prunes, dried cherries and a hint of raisin in the aroma. A medium low alcohol aroma is also present. The beer is starting to show some signs of oxidation with a vinous sherry note forming. Pours black with a thick dark mocha head that steadily recedes fairly quickly leaving a light film in the center and a ring on the edges. Faint lacing and moderate legs. Flavor is rather enjoyable. The dark malts have a bit of a toasted cracker flavor to them to go along with the light coffee and moderate chocolate flavor. There is a decent amount of dark fruit esters in the flavor as well with prune and raisin being more prevalent than cherry. By this point in time the hop flavor has completely faded if there ever was one. Bitterness is moderate and astringency is low. Medium light alcohol note in the finish - lighter than the nose leads you to believe. Finishes fairly dry which is nice. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium to medium high carbonation. Astringency is quite low and alcohol warmth is moderate. This beer is pretty darn good. It's not amazing and I understand why it isn't highly sought after, but it is solid and very enjoyable. I found the flavor to be quite good and better than the aroma. I like that it doesn't feel like it has a terminal gravity of 1.035. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml bottle @ Ale House in Amesbury, MA. $22.00 Vintage. Aromas of dark roasted malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, light booze and soy sauce. Roasted malt with rich molasses and espresso. Dark fruit hints. Nice hops balancing out the sweetness on the finish. Oily texture. Very drinkable. The only down fall was the ABV burn in the finish. But it just depends on your perspective ( do you like the alcohol burn on the way down?) Overall, pretty good. I didn’t mind paying the price since I haven’t ever seen this brewery for sale in the State of NH.

Opaque black stout. Soft palate. Rich thick malt that has a little roast and smoke. Smooth and frothy in the mouth. Finishes with a little repressed hop. Overall a smooth and well flavoured stout. Nice!

Bottle. Pours a cloudy brown with tan head that diminishes very quickly. The aroma is roasted malt and coffee. Thin mouthfeel with chococolate and light smoke in the finish. Easy to drink a very impressive imperial stout from New England Brewing.
