#MashTag was an epic experiment in crowdsourcing, which handed the keys to the brewery over to craft beer drinkers for a week. We asked you guys via Facebook and Twitter to direct all the elements of the brew and you decided to brew a 7.5% American Brown Ale with oak chips and hazelnuts.

Malts: Roasted Barley, Caramalt, Pale Malt, Amber Malt. Hi
Hops: Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, Pacific Gem.

Bottle. Vineous, earthy roasted nose. Dark chestnut, offwhite cream. Fullbodied, roasted, caramel, dark sugar, vanilla and tobacco from the oak, cant claim I detect more nutty notes than you would expect from the dark malts. Earthy and herbal aromatic hops round it off nicely. Full on flavor, well balanced works well as a winter warmer. Nice.

Pours dark brown with a fading head.Nose shows cocoa, nut pralines and soft roasted malt.Similar flavours, cocoa, nutty malt and a more dominant roasted character. Some coffee too. A bit harsh with the heavy roast and hop bitterness.Carbonation seems a bit over the top.

330 ml bottle. Clear, dark amber body with a dense beige head. Aroma has malt, nuts and a hint of chocolate. Flavor is quite sweet, malty, fruity, some chocolate and moderate bitterness. Not the most typical brown ale, feels a bit out of balance and a bit dull actually.

On tap at La Fine Mousse, Paris on 29th November 2013. Clear ruby-brown with lasting pale brown creamy foam, and full lacing. Rich roasty aroma with fruitcake and berries. Burst of rich roastiness in-mouth, along with hazelnut nuttiness. Cherry fruits, raisins harmonise with these flavours and black pepper notes tickle the rear-mouth. Finish is cherry fruit and hazelnut. Zingy yet bodiful, engaging texture. Beautifully crafted brown ale.

Bottle, Brew Dog shop. Dark brown pour with a meek tan head. Roast, brown sugar and nut notes in the snout. Flavour was lightly sweet and malty with more nut character alongside some earthy bitterness. Somehow muddled and rather underwhelming.

Keg @ BrewDog Shepherd’s Bush. Pours a gorgeous dark brown. Reasonable head which dissipates quickly. The aroma isn’t very strong. Mostly liquorice allsorts, with a bit of chocolate and a bit of smoke. Taste is - yum! Flavours carry through impeccably. Sweet throughout with liquorice at the forefront. Aftertaste is slightly more bitter. A very tasty little cracker.

Bottle from Brewdog online shop. Pours a rich brown with a moderate beige head. Light fizz and an oddly powdery mouthfeel. Cocoa nibs up front swiftly followed by nut and muscovado sugar. There’s some light piney hops and a touch of citrus before a big waft of alcohol. Dry, mildly bitter finish with a few bark chips. A fine beer.

Bottle. A reddish brown beer with a dense beige head. Caramel, roasted malts, nuts and some chocolate in the aroma. Roasted malts, chocolate, some toffee and a nice bitterness in the flavor. Medium to full body and a nice carbonation level. Roasted finish. A pretty boring one, but tasteful and easy drinkable. 131129

Half pint @ Brewdog Leeds. Brilliantly full tasting brown ale with dusty chocolate flavours and very mild hazelnuts coming through. Couldn’t help taking big gulps so I could relish the taste even more. Another great Brewdog beer.
