The first 2017 release in our boundary-pushing release of one-off Abstrakt beers is here!

An imperial stout brewed with cacao and coffee, AB:22 has spent two years in darkness, drawing complex and indulgent flavour from the Speyside whisky casks in which it has resided: chocolate ganache, cold-brew coffee, vanilla pods, molasses, chocolate-covered raisin, fudge sundae, espresso martini, toasted coconut… this is one of our most intense and decadent barrel aged stouts, ever.

Sample from 375 ml bottle. Pitch black with a few tanned bubbles around the edges of the glass. Sweet aroma with caramel malts, soy sauce, vanilla, molasses, fruits and coconut. Taste is sweet. Full body with an oliy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes sweet with roasted dark malts. Very nice!

(375ml bottle from Systembolaget) Pours black with a moderate pale brown head. Aroma of chocolate icing, dark toffee, molasses, whisky, raisins, port/red dessert wine, soft cold brew coffee, moderately roasted malt, wood, leather. Flavour is moderately sweet, notes of molasses, semi-sweet chocolate, cacao, raisins, quite some whisky, warm, woody, leather, almost no peat, quite soft vanilla too. Rather a lot of spirit-style heat in the back end, real low peat Scotch finish like you might expect, a little leathery, some cacao. Medium bodied, feels a little thin in the mouth for style, soft to average carbonation. The quality of the whisky here is pretty easy-going as befits the casks used, but it's present in abundance. Nice, I'd just like a little more malt body to match the booze and avoid the thinness.

Draught at Brewdog tap takeover at Mels Diner, Vienna.
Black body, with a small, creamy, dark coffee-colored head.
Aroma of bourbon, soy sauce, bitter chocolate, cocoa powder, liquorice, tobacco, dark fruits.
Tastes pretty similar.
Medium, oily mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation.
Finishes warm, astringent, boozy, dry, roasty, wooden, with bourbon, cocoa powder, liquorice, soy sauce, tobacco.

Tasty! Rich and complex, with lovely, dry roast notes and the bourbon barrel really well integrated. Maybe slightly too boozy towards the finish, while still really comfortable to sip. Not the best bourbon ba Imperial Stout I've had, but surely a great example.

Bottle thanks to Ben! Pours inky black, medium dark brown head, dissipates to a ring with good lacing. Aroma is leathery, cocoa, peat, cigars. Flavor is medium sweet, light plus bitter, just a bit of smoke but a leathery tobacco feel to it with notes of chocolate and vanilla, blackstrap molasses. Not much coffee remains for me, but the flavors that are left are complex and interesting. Thick mouthfeel.

Had this once on tap, now bottle form the Brewdog shop. Pours extremely black, I think it's the darkest beer I've seen with definitely the darkest head I have ever encountered on a beer. Medium head retention. Aroma is incredibly rich and complex. Rich dark malts, which give a malty sweet and somewhat caramelly aroma. Coffee and chocolate, with rich espresso notes. Very nice berry/dark fruit aroma too, raisins, plums, also vinous. Whisky and oak is also very noticeable. Overall complex but well balanced. Big body with an oily and thick mouthfeel. Flavour is just as amazing as aroma promises. Dense, deep and complex, with a big malty body. Some caramel sweetness, with dry cocoa and lots of sweet coffee. Dark fruit and berries once again, licorice. Whisky and oak are very noticeable and give the beer a perfect edge, whilst mellowing down the overall sweetness and supplying just a tad of fire and spice. Very very well balanced. Finishes long with lots of coffee, sweet and boozy, with a nice whisky heat. Absolutely amazing beer. Best Abstrakt I have had and I think Brewdog's best barrel-aged imperial stout, overall one of the best in the category I have tried. Perfect.

On tap at Fakin Zagreb. Pitch black, small brown head, wood, chocolate and whiff of cherries in the nose. Roasted malt, wood, barrel, dark chocolate, licorice and touch of cherries and alcohol with heavy notes of wood in the finish. Decent brew.
