[i] [b] BCA Best Bittern (nice label) from the Dodgi’ Deli’, Cowley Road, Oxford, 28-04-08 [/i] [/b] Amber in colour with off white head. Good citrusy bite that lingers for a long while on the roof of the mouth, lacks subtlety and interest and yet I’m growing to quite like it and when I count up the scores I note that I’ve rated this higher than I expected. It’s not bad at all but not the best from Wagtail.

Bottle at Chris_o’s The Wolf tasting. I’ve been looking for Wagtail beers for some time now so I was intrigued to see how they are. Amber colour with lasting beige head. Flemish white pig aroma (as Urbain would say), rather a nice English beer. Not bad. Pretty good hop. Nice enough.

[i] [b] Bottle from the Dodgi’ Deli’ Cowley Road had this, this evening 22-04-08 [/i] [/b] Light mid golden, bubbly white head that quickly disappears some sulphurous notes and a little sweet malt. Soft in the mouth, some vanilla and a very light bitterness which shows at the end, restrained and a bit safe but pleasant with some light citrus, even little bit dusty. This gets better and I suppose it suffered from having to follow Casey’s impressive IPA, not bad at all.

Bottle, Carringtons, Didsbury. Poured a Golden (what else?! ) colour with a lingering white head. Malty, citrus aromas. Hoppy nicely balanced fresh crisp taste with further citrus hints. Decent dry finish. This is a good 3.49er.. ok make that 3.5.

[i] [b] Bottle from the Dogi’ Deli, Cowley Road, had this 24-03-08 [/i] [/b] Soft roasted notes of coffee and a gentle milky chocolateyness waft forth from this. Pours very dark brown with ruby glints and a lovely creamy head. Tasy and very decent porter quite subtle at times but the chocolate and coffee in the nose are here again in the mouth, nice smoothness to this, once again another good beer from Wagtail.

[i] [b] BCA Bottle from the Dodgi’ Deli’ Cowley Road, Oxford. Had this 23-03-08 [/i] [/b] Lovely colour, deep rich amber great clarity and a nice off-white head. Tasty, fruity and with far more flavour than a 4.5% beer should have. Nice steady bitterness and good full bodied beer, drying towards the end. Lovely beer.

Bottle at home ... Thanks to FIn for pointing me at this one ... Deep solid black with short lived head ... roast coffee with hint of tobacco ... Ohh bitter roast coffee malts ... bit too bitter for me ... Very solid stout ... behind the bitterness is lots of smooth roast malts ... good body ... and a simple but rounded stout.

[i] [b] Bottle picked up from the Dodgi’ Deli’, Cowley Road, Oxford, 13-03-08 [/i] [/b] Very dark brown pour with a small tan head. Wonderful aroma, Loz pointed out that there was rolling tobacco how right she was it smelt quite sublime and I don’t even smoke and never had done, there were also some gentle woody notes. The taste is simplicity itself wonderful gentle roasted flavour’s nice coffee touches, this isn’t laden down with sweet malts, it just tastes very good, down to earth proper stout. I’m sure this sort of stout is very much in keeping with how stouts used to be, it’s simple, honest and bloody marvellous.

Cask (handpump) @ New Oxford, Manchester M4, UK. Clear medium to dark yellow color with a average, creamy, good lacing, fully lasting, off-white to white head. Aroma is light to moderate malty, toasted, moderate to light heavy toffee, butter. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average duration. Body is medium, texture is oily creamy, carbonation is flat. (170108)

Cask (gravity filled jug) @ Smithfield Hotel & Bar, Manchester M4, UK. Clear dark red brown color with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is light to moderate malty, coffee, toffee, vanilla. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium to light, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is flat. (160108)
